Storm chances this week and a look at tornado ratings from Friday

    By Jason Parkin,

The National Weather Service office in Johnston has released preliminary tornado tracks and ratings from Friday’s outbreak, which can be found here . More paths and ratings are likely to be added as analysis of damage proceeds, as this can take some time. Meteorologist Gabe Prough has put graphics together summarizing some of the findings so far, which can be found below.

For those interested, the Omaha National Weather Service office will be adding paths and ratings from western Iowa and Nebraska Friday here as they become available.

Highs on a breezy Monday can be seen below, and it appears clouds may stick around into the early afternoon. Tuesday will be much warmer and also breezy.

Tuesday’s warmth will help fuel late-day and evening storms that could become severe as a cold front moves across Iowa. Diverging air at the top of the troposphere and a disturbance moving through will also provide support for storm formation. The SPC’s risk and probability graphics for late Tuesday follow.

Storms will move through in the evening, as seen in the European computer model graphic below left. The beginning of Wednesday looks dry as I type this Sunday evening, but more storms are possible late in the day.

Colorado State University’s machine learning algorithms keep us in slight chances for strong storms late Wednesday and again on Thursday (below).

As we look at the 6-to-10 and 8-to-14-day graphics below, it appears our warmer and wetter pattern may continue into the middle of May. Drought worries will subside for the time being as farmers look for windows for field work.
