Butts County voters pass two property tax relief bills

Butts County voters have approved two referendums that will reduce property taxes for homeowners in the county. Homestead Tax Referendum Senate Bill 544, Act 614 Homestead Tax Referendum Senate Bill 544, Act 614 passed with 8,329 “yes” votes and 1,002 “no” votes. This bill will provide a $70,000 homestead exemption from Butts County ad valorem taxes for county purposes for residents 62 years of age or older. To receive the exemption, the property owner must own and occupy the home as their primary homestead and apply for the exemption through the local tax commissioner. The exemption will then automatically renew annually if the occupancy status remains unchanged. Homestead Tax Referendum Senate Bill 545, Act 615 Homestead Tax Referendum Senate Bill 545, Act 615 also passed with 8,099 “yes” votes and 1,141 “no” votes. Henry County freight study plan taking shape

HENRY COUNTY — Nearly two months following the Board of Commissioners’ unanimous decision to conduct a freight study, Henry County’s plan is taking shape. Erin Thoresen, the project manager of Gresham Smith, updated commissioners with the plan’s progress at Tuesday’s meeting. Thoresen said the kickoff meeting was Monday, Oct. 26 and it is an 18-month study ending approximately in February 2028. The county’s freight cluster — an area with a high concentration of warehouses, distribution centers and trucking facilities — stretches from McDonough to Locust Grove. The primary corridor follows Interstate 75, with an emphasis on Ga. Highways 20, 81, 42 and 155, McDonough Parkway and Industrial Boulevard. The county will conduct the study in partnership with the Atlanta Regional Commission as well as the cities of McDonough and Locust Grove. The study’s primary objectives will include addressing truck parking needs, reducing traffic congestion and improving worker access to freight industry jobs. “Fifteen years ago, we didn’t see the same usage of fulfillment centers as we see now where goods are shipped into a distribution center, and then they use smaller vehicles to distribute those out to the retailers in the local area,” Thoresen said. “Those are new and evolving

FLOST passes, T-SPLOST 2 rejected by Henry County voters

HENRY COUNTY — Two tax referendums were on Tuesday’s ballot for Henry County voters’ consideration — Transportation Special Local Option Tax (T-SPLOST) and Floating Local Option Tax (FLOST). FLOST was approved, with 61.14% of voters supporting the 1-cent sales tax, while T-SPLOST 2 was narrowly defeated, 51.65% to 48.35%. T-SPLOST 2 Referendum T-SPLOST 2 would have been a continuation of a 1-cent sales tax, with collections earmarked for major road projects, resurfacing of roads, improvements to intersections and more. Henry County Board of Commissioners Chair Harrell said conversations with residents leading up to the election revealed some confusion about the referendum. “In conversations with residents, we heard confusion about whether this was an additional tax, a property tax or a measure focused on public transportation,” Harrell said. “The proposal was a renewal of the transportation sales tax.” The first T-SPLOST for Henry County was approved in November 2021 with collections ending in March 2027. Harrell said T-SPLOST is the primary funding source for roadway improvements across Henry County. As a result of T-SPLOST 2 not passing, Harrell shared a list of projects that will be on hold: — Jonesboro Road widening. — Fairview Road widening. — Bill Gardner Parkway widening.

Hampton, McDonough referendums receive voter approval

HENRY COUNTY — Voters in Hampton and McDonough approved two city-specific referendums during the Nov. 3 special election, although McDonough officials will have to resubmit their measure during a future election cycle. McDonough Alcohol Packaged Sales Referendum The city of McDonough’s alcohol package sales received 68.54% of the vote. However, according to Mayor Kamali Varner, the city will have to redo its referendum for a later election cycle. "Due to a logistical delay in advertising, the City of McDonough will resubmit its packaged sales referendum for a future election,” Varner said. “However, city officials are pleased to see the strong public support for authorizing licensing for the packaged sale of distilled spirits in McDonough.” If passed, McDonough’s alcohol package sales referendum would allow issuance of licenses to businesses for the purposes of selling alcohol in packaged form. Generally, approving this means licensed retailers would be permitted to sell bottles of alcohol for customers to take home. “Upon passage of a subsequent referendum, the city will begin the process of issuing such licenses,” Varner said. “This will ensure that taxes collected from local alcohol sales will remain in the city for the betterment of McDonough." Hampton Homestead Exemption Referendum The city

McBath secures another term representing Georgia’s 6th District

Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Marietta, secured another two-year term Tuesday evening against Republican challenger Kevin Martin. The Associated Press called the race for McBath around 7:30 P.M. At that time, McBath led Martin 84.3% to 15.7%, according to unofficial results from the Associated Press. Results are not official until they are certified by the Cobb Elections Board. The victory didn’t come as a surprise in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, which covers portions of Cobb, Douglas, Fayette and Fulton counties. The district heavily favors Democrats, according to Cook’s Political Report. McBath did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Martin, a controller from Smyrna, also did not respond immediately to a request for comment. A gun control advocate, McBath first ran for Congress in 2018, ousting Republican incumbent Karen Handel. When Republicans redrew electoral districts following the 2020 Census, McBath emerged victorious from a competitive primary against Democratic House Rep. Carolyn Bordeaux. When the district was redrawn again to comply with a court order that found the map unfairly diluted the votes of African-Americans, McBath shifted to the current map. She briefly considered running in the crowded Democratic primary for governor, but suspended her exploratory committee last year due to her

Rockdale voters approve FLOST for property tax relief

CONYERS — Rockdale County voters have approved a new 1% sales tax intended to reduce county and city property taxes, according to unofficial election results. The Floating Local Option Sales Tax, or FLOST, received about 64% of the vote in Tuesday’s election. Unofficial results Wednesday showed 21,084 voters supporting the measure and 11,942 voting against it. Rockdale voters approve a 1% FLOST for property tax relief The vote authorizes Rockdale County to collect an additional 1% sales and use tax for five years, with the revenue required to be used exclusively to reduce property taxes imposed by Rockdale County and the city of Conyers. The new tax will raise the combined sales tax rate in Rockdale County from 7% to 8%. County officials estimated ahead of the election that FLOST could generate approximately $26 million countywide in 2027. Under an agreement between Rockdale County and Conyers, approximately 81.5%, or about $21 million, would go to the county, while roughly 18.4%, or $4.8 million, would go to the city. Unlike a SPLOST, which funds designated capital projects, FLOST revenue must fund property tax relief. During a September town hall on the proposal, officials estimated the revenue could reduce the county’s current

AROUND TOWN: More redevelopment happening in downtown Lawrenceville

A longtime eatery on the Lawrenceville Square is moving? A bakery/coffee shop may be going in the Lawrenceville Train Depot? There’s a lot happening in the heart of Lawrenceville. After the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit concluded last week, Lawrenceville City Manager Chuck Warbington gave the Daily Post a tease of some redevelopment that is happening in the city’s downtown and depot districts. One bit of redevelopment is actually a relocation. Blue Rooster Bake Shop and Eatery is planning to move off the Lawrenceville Square and head a couple of blocks up North Clayton Street to a new location in the Depot District. Blue Rooster has been on the square, directly across from the north entrance to the Gwinnett County Historic Courthouse, for years, but that will change in the not too distant future. The bakery is currently renovating an old business space at the corner of North Clayton and Born Streets with plans to move into that location once the renovations are finished. “They’ve torn all of the stuff off the sides of the building,” Warbington said. “It looks like a shed now but they’re actually going to be upgrading that. That will be our first food concept down there
