Artist Ken Mazzu’s latest works capture essence of Southeast Texas landscape
As a younger man living and working in Houston, Ken Mazzu said his paintings had an urban aesthetic that reflected his environment. Now, as he has matured, Mazzu has turned his attention to the swamps and marshes of Southeast Texas. “In my 30s and 40s, my art was about where I was and what was going on while I was there,” Mazzu said. “This work, the work of my 50s, is a little bit more about who I am and where I'm from.” The Beaumont native’s latest exhibition, “Ken Mazzu: Wetlands,” on display at Lamar University’s Dishman Art Museum through Nov. 13, is a comprehensive exploration of the area’s distinctive landscapes. Mazzu, a professor at Houston’s Glassell School of Art, said his work has always had a hint of landscape, whether it was abstract or representational, but this is the first time he has seriously focused on the Southeast Texas Gulf Coast region. “I think the need to get out of an urban environment and get into nature, as I've gotten older, that's become more important,” he said. “Just watching waves on the beach really clears my brain. Bossier’s paintings bring life to sadness in Art Studio exhibition
A woman washes clothes in a tub, her face obscured by a black scribble. She evokes working-class resilience. As she works, words from John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” swirl around her — “If dreams were lightning and thunder were desire, this ol house would’ve burnt down a long time ago.” Justin Bossier’s painting “Both” depicts the stoicism of working-class people. Bossier’s exhibition, “The Dust & The Damned,” on display at The Art Studio Inc. through Oct. 23, is a visually energetic and thematically layered collection of works. The images draw on Depression-era American iconography. The figures appear burdened, yet the paintings also incorporate modern street art sensibilities, with colorful, aggressive brushstrokes and scribbled words. Bossier said he comes from a family of welders and pipefitters, people he described as hard-working. He said the show focuses on working-class people. “I think there's just a lot to be said about somebody who goes to work every day and comes home, and just have their family and what they’ve got — that's rich to them,” Bossier said. “It doesn't take money to make you rich. It doesn't take things to make you your life good.” The painting “Question” depicts a couple looking into
