On February 27, 2024, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office was called to a possible vehicle accident involving a motorcycle at US HWY 96 S and County Road 317 just south of Roaganville in Jasper County, according to a JCSO news release.

Winds breaks power lines and sparks fires
High winds, snapping power lines and dry conditions resulted in two fires at almost the same time in the north end of Jasper County on Tuesday afternoon. The volunteers of both the Jasper and Lake Rayburn Fire Departments along with workers from the Texas Forest Service were dispatched to grass and wood fires at two locations just off of Highway 96 and south of Recreational Road 255 shortly before 1:00, when it was reported that fallen power lines had sparked grass and woods fires.

Area fire departments have been busy dealing with wildfires over the last few days, and on Tuesday the Lake Rayburn Fire Department battled three within four hours. During the noon hour, Lake Rayburn firefighters responded to County Road 207 near Mill Creek Baptist Church when it was reported that a downed power line resulted in a woods fire. Brookeland Wildcats moving on
The second round of the UIL High School basketball playoffs is in the books and the Brookeland Wildcats will be moving on to Round 3. It was once again a dominating performance by the Wildcats who more than doubled the score of their opponents the Abbott Panthers 70 to 32.
