Sylvania – Then & Now: 6403 Monroe Street
In 1903 Warren W. and Mary (Smith) Blankley purchased what became Lot 10 of Hubbard’s Addition and in 1909, built the home shown in the 1964 photo. The couple was married in 1890, and Mary died before the 1910 census was taken. Warren, 38, was listed living here by himself. He was employed as a motorman for the Toledo & Western Railway, the passenger train service that ran through Sylvania at this time . In 1912 he married Sophia Ott, and they continued to own this home until 1919 when they built a new home, just to the west, at 6457 Monroe St. (I will tell you more about them when we visit that property.)

To the editor: Community safety begins with communities that thrive
Ask almost anyone what makes them feel safe, and you probably will not hear statistics. They will talk about children riding their bikes until the streetlights come on. Neighbors who know each other’s names. Homes that are cared for. Local businesses that stay open. Parks where families gather. Jobs that provide stability. Streets where people feel comfortable walking after dinner. Safety is not just the absence of crime. It is the presence of opportunity, connection, and hope. That belief has guided the work of Local Initiatives Support Corp. Toledo for more than 35 years. As a community development organization, LISC partners with residents, nonprofits, businesses, philanthropy, and government to invest in affordable housing, small businesses, neighborhood revitalization, financial opportunity, and the local organizations that help communities thrive. Our work is rooted in a simple idea: strong neighborhoods create better outcomes for everyone. That is why a new report from the Brookings Institution, developed in collaboration with LISC and informed by the organization’s decades of experience investing in neighborhoods across the country, is so important. The research reminds us that building safer communities requires more than responding to violence after it happens. It requires investing in the people and places that

Sylvania native buys Haymarket Square, plans overhaul
Blink and you’ll miss it. That’s what Frank Bobroski, owner of the Sodbuster Bar in Haymarket Square, has thought for the last 15 years. “There’s been no change to the center in years, so I’m looking forward to some new energy here,” Mr. Bobroski said. “If you don’t know it is here, you drive right by.” Built in 1973 by Eugene Paul, Haymarket Square retains its Old West theme but sits largely hidden from Main Street in downtown Sylvania. Now a Sylvania native and technology executive has purchased the shopping center with plans to renovate it and restore it as a downtown destination. Chad Stachowicz, a 2002 graduate of Northview High School, lives in North Carolina and is CEO of Cloverhound, an engineering and software development company. Cloverhound also has offices in Denver, Costa Rica — and soon — Sylvania. “I live in Charlotte, which is very busy, and it is a lot to live in every day,” said Mr. Stachowicz, who, with his wife, Kat, has two daughters, Penelope, 10, and Norah, 8. “I miss the small-town feel of Sylvania. I will probably retire and live here in Sylvania someday.” Mr. Stachowicz said he learned of Haymarket being for

Toledo neighbors demand demolition of Mulberry Street home with no roof, floor or front door
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A house at the corner of Mulberry and Dexter streets is missing its roof, floor and its front door. Neighbors say it’s been sitting vacant for 8 years. The front door of the structure collapsed about a month ago, according to a neighbor who lives across the street. The windows are boarded up, graffiti covers the side of the building and a tree appears to have fallen through the roof at some point. Three and a half walls remain standing.

Toledo mid-year housing market review
Seven months into 2026, the housing market is showing signs of unwinding from the pandemic-era frenzy that drained supply, pushed prices to record highs, and brought activity to a standstill. Buyers have more homes to choose from than they did at the start of the year, competition has balanced in a few slower markets, and price growth has remained relatively modest. Affordability is still a key issue and is limiting activity, though.
