Grand Rapids City Council shifts to lease option for municipal dispensary plans

The Grand Rapids City Council made a site visit to what could be the city’s future municipal cannabis dispensary during its Monday, Oct. 26, work session. The city’s initial plan was to build the dispensary from the ground up, but that plan became less feasible after city officials took a closer look at the finances of Anoka’s municipal dispensary. The Anoka dispensary opened in February and has served as both a partner and model for Grand Rapids’ development plans. Because the dispensary is city-owned, Grand Rapids was able to review its financial data from February through July. According to city administrator Tom Pagel, Anoka’s business plan did not account for the city and state sales taxes calculated into its revenue. An average customer at Anoka’s dispensary was projected to spend close to $200 per visit, but building the tax into sales trimmed that number to less than $100 per visit. The Grand Rapids City Council reassessed the true cost of building and operating a municipal dispensary with the sales tax included, and determined leasing an existing site would be the safer financial decision. Pagel said the updated projections lowered Grand Rapids’ projected average transaction from $98 per visit to $88.

‘They made my dreams come true’: A Grand Rapids woman’s path to surrogacy

The first time Jordan Groom left the hospital after delivering twins for another family, the thank-yous flowed and followed her out the door. They found her in the lobby. They found her in the parking garage, where the intended parents had parked right next to her. When she merged onto I-5, there they were again, in the next lane. “I was like, oh my gosh,” Groom said, laughing. “I actually felt the same way. I felt like I had to thank them for allowing me this beautiful experience.” That moment sums up how Groom, who now lives in Grand Rapids with her own family, approaches gestational surrogacy: as a gift that runs in both directions. “They made my dreams come true,” she said of the couple, “but I’m sure it felt vice versa.” Groom’s path started with a coworker back in her hometown of Forks, Washington, a woman she describes as amazing, who endured repeated miscarriages. “It was really hard and heartbreaking seeing my friend go through that,” she said. At the time, Groom hadn’t yet had children of her own, which surrogates must have. She said that if she had, she would have done it on the spot. “I

Jack Wolf wrestles to second in preseason nationals

DES MOINES, (Iowa) — In the first event of the USA Wrestling season, Grand Rapids matman Jack Wolf showed he’s ready to go in the rapidly approaching high school season. There’s no question following his second overall finish in last week’s 2026 U.S. Marine Corps Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals & Boys National Recruiting Showcase, where more than 1,500 wrestlers gathered to compete in West Des Moines. The Thunderhawks junior is fifth in the preseason AA rankings at 189 pounds according to Dub Stat after wrestling in the state tournament last season. In West Des Moines, he wrestled at 190 in the 11th and 12th Grade Division for the Brian Keck, which USA Wrestling promotes as a “an electrifying experience that combines top-notch wrestling action for boys and girls from grades 1st - High School.” Wolf, wrestling for Jack Pine Savage, fit the bill in the event with his performance. After earning a bye in the Round of 64, he took on Wyatt Kleinschmit of South Dakota’s Heartland Wrestling Academy and earned a fall in less than a minute. He defeated Beckium Nason of South Bellevue Wrestling Club in Washington at 2:29 to earn a match in the quarterfinals. He

Northern Minnesota blows rain, temperature records out of the water

If Northern Minnesota’s recent rain had been snow, meteorologist Ketzel Levens said it would’ve been quite the event. “It would have been feet upon feet upon feet of snow if it had been all snow,” said Levens, who works for the National Weather Service in Duluth. “ ... We probably would have been breaking snow records as well. Yeah, it would have been a storm that completely shut down northeast Minnesota, most likely.”
