JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Onslow County Schools is getting a new weapon detection system for its high schools.

In Tuesday’s school board meeting, the board unanimously approved starting the process of getting 23 systems for weapons detection. Those would cost about $1.8 million. This comes after several incidents last year at high schools in the district.

School leaders said these systems will be placed at the front of schools for students to pass through as they enter each day.

“Jacksonville High School will have four, Dixon High School will have four, all the rest will have 3,” Onslow County Schools Chief of Operations Brendan Gartner said.

The new weapons detention systems will be installed by next school year. The board is also looking into getting vape detection systems.
