JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Parents who are facing a long summer of no school and having the kids at home, the Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson offers all kinds of things inside and outdoors to occupy an afternoon. And it’s not just to kill time, but to make time come alive.

For instance, there is the newly opened “Enchanted Land of Story.”

“We are in one of MCM’s newest exhibits. It’s our outdoor exhibit called, ‘The Enchanted Land of Story,’ based on Sherry Norfolk’s poem, ‘The Enchanted Land of Story.’ It was originally built in 2014, and it was known as The Literacy Garden. So, after 10 years it needed much needed improvements, just kind of a refresh to be brought back to life,” said Angela Mitchell, Director of External Affairs for the Mississippi Children’s Museum.

Children come here and explore the mushroom forest and the melodic music experience, and they can even rock and roll on the topsy-turvy chairs. I met two beautiful butterflies in the amphitheater acting out their adventures of the day, and we went to see the never ending rain garden where children can don and umbrella and splash to their hearts content or forget the umbrella and really get involved in the water experience.

The most enchanting thing about the “Enchanted Land of Story” is the children. I mean after, it’s just pretty colored things until somebody’s imagination gets a hold of it, and then the shapes and colors and little things and big things and noisy things and twirly things and everything gets molded together into a real live story.

The next thing you know, it’s time to go home. But a part of the enchantment stays with you in your imagination, and “The Enchanted Land of Story” will be right here the next time you are ready to make another of your own stories at the Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson.
