South Gwinnett to host unbeaten Newton in Game 10

South Gwinnett and Newton resume their long-running football series — they first played in 1980 — on Friday for a matchup that has been marked by close games in recent seasons. Five of the last six meetings between the two have been decided by 10 or fewer points, including last year’s 27-21 Newton win. The Rams won 58-40 in 2024, but South won 31-28 in 2023. Newton has won eight of the last 10 with South, which also won 13-6 over the Rams in 2021. Both teams are firmly in the state playoffs based on their spot in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings with South at No. 17 and unbeaten Newton at No. 2. South is coming off an important 19-16 win over Rockdale County, bouncing back from a lopsided loss to Grayson the week before. How it won last week was impressive, too. Rockdale went up 16-9 on a defensive touchdown before South tied the score on a fourth-quarter TD pass from C.J. Peoples to Jayden Juniors. South’s defense continued to play well from there, and Didier Flores Funez knocked in a game-winning field goal with 25 seconds left. Peoples completed 26 of 41 passes for

FLOST passes, T-SPLOST 2 rejected by Henry County voters

HENRY COUNTY — Two tax referendums were on Tuesday’s ballot for Henry County voters’ consideration — Transportation Special Local Option Tax (T-SPLOST) and Floating Local Option Tax (FLOST). FLOST was approved, with 61.14% of voters supporting the 1-cent sales tax, while T-SPLOST 2 was narrowly defeated, 51.65% to 48.35%. T-SPLOST 2 Referendum T-SPLOST 2 would have been a continuation of a 1-cent sales tax, with collections earmarked for major road projects, resurfacing of roads, improvements to intersections and more. Henry County Board of Commissioners Chair Harrell said conversations with residents leading up to the election revealed some confusion about the referendum. “In conversations with residents, we heard confusion about whether this was an additional tax, a property tax or a measure focused on public transportation,” Harrell said. “The proposal was a renewal of the transportation sales tax.” The first T-SPLOST for Henry County was approved in November 2021 with collections ending in March 2027. Harrell said T-SPLOST is the primary funding source for roadway improvements across Henry County. As a result of T-SPLOST 2 not passing, Harrell shared a list of projects that will be on hold: — Jonesboro Road widening. — Fairview Road widening. — Bill Gardner Parkway widening.

Hampton, McDonough referendums receive voter approval

HENRY COUNTY — Voters in Hampton and McDonough approved two city-specific referendums during the Nov. 3 special election, although McDonough officials will have to resubmit their measure during a future election cycle. McDonough Alcohol Packaged Sales Referendum The city of McDonough’s alcohol package sales received 68.54% of the vote. However, according to Mayor Kamali Varner, the city will have to redo its referendum for a later election cycle. "Due to a logistical delay in advertising, the City of McDonough will resubmit its packaged sales referendum for a future election,” Varner said. “However, city officials are pleased to see the strong public support for authorizing licensing for the packaged sale of distilled spirits in McDonough.” If passed, McDonough’s alcohol package sales referendum would allow issuance of licenses to businesses for the purposes of selling alcohol in packaged form. Generally, approving this means licensed retailers would be permitted to sell bottles of alcohol for customers to take home. “Upon passage of a subsequent referendum, the city will begin the process of issuing such licenses,” Varner said. “This will ensure that taxes collected from local alcohol sales will remain in the city for the betterment of McDonough." Grayson football closes regular season with home game against Rockdale

After watching a lead slip away at unbeaten Newton on Oct. 16, the Grayson football team delivered one of its most complete games of the season two weeks ago. It stifled a talented South Gwinnett offense and rolled up the points in a convincing 52-0 victory on Oct. 23, taking some positive momentum into last week’s bye. The Rams return to action Friday at home against Rockdale County in the regular-season finale, looking to shore up their state playoff position. Before Friday, Grayson boasts a No. 13 ranking in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings. Rockdale has dipped to No. 37 after its run through a tough region. The Rams’ balanced offense has played better as the season has progressed with quarterback Deuce Smith and a stout running game leading the way. Smith has thrown for 1,472 yards and 13 touchdowns, while a bevy of Rams have shared the carries at running back. Cam Hurst (29 catches, 356 yards, four TDs) and Saif Bin-Wahad (27 catches, 350 yards, three TDs) have emerged as the top receivers. Grayson’s defense has totaled 76 tackles for losses and 23 sacks (six by Aaron Black and four by Elijah Tillman). Black and

Rockdale voters approve FLOST for property tax relief

CONYERS — Rockdale County voters have approved a new 1% sales tax intended to reduce county and city property taxes, according to unofficial election results. The Floating Local Option Sales Tax, or FLOST, received about 64% of the vote in Tuesday’s election. Unofficial results Wednesday showed 21,084 voters supporting the measure and 11,942 voting against it. Rockdale voters approve a 1% FLOST for property tax relief The vote authorizes Rockdale County to collect an additional 1% sales and use tax for five years, with the revenue required to be used exclusively to reduce property taxes imposed by Rockdale County and the city of Conyers. The new tax will raise the combined sales tax rate in Rockdale County from 7% to 8%. County officials estimated ahead of the election that FLOST could generate approximately $26 million countywide in 2027. Under an agreement between Rockdale County and Conyers, approximately 81.5%, or about $21 million, would go to the county, while roughly 18.4%, or $4.8 million, would go to the city. Unlike a SPLOST, which funds designated capital projects, FLOST revenue must fund property tax relief. During a September town hall on the proposal, officials estimated the revenue could reduce the county’s current
