Wagner touts new nuclear reactor, fundraising campaign in address to State Board of Education
POCATELLO — Idaho State University plans to build a second nuclear microreactor on the Pocatello campus, President Robert Wagner told the Idaho State Board of Education during its annual meeting at ISU last week, one of several new initiatives he unveiled that went beyond the ground he covered in his State of the University Address in April . Wagner presented a strategic report to the board Aug. 12 , touching on many of the same themes from his April address — ISU’s “Contract for Idaho,” record enrollment and retention, and the university’s response to state budget cuts . But the presentation also included new announcements on nuclear energy, fundraising, medical education and campus growth. Wagner said the four-megawatt microreactor, which will be housed on the Pocatello campus, builds on ISU’s status as “Idaho’s nuclear university” and its decades-long partnerships with the Idaho National Laboratory and the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense. He said ISU is the only university in the nation selected for the Nuclear Energy Launchpad USA program, which will support the project. “The four-megawatt microreactor technology will enable even greater research and hands-on workforce development under a public-private partnership model,” Wagner said, adding that the technology leverages

Firth's next golden age has a name: Madison Torgerson
Firth High School’s golden age of track and field started in 1997 and closed in 2008. Not a middle age or a bronze age. This was a golden age. Firth teams combined for 10 state track and field titles during that particular age, buoyed by performers such as Heidi Hopkins, Shawn Ellsworth and Marianne Scheiss. Today, the Cougars appear on the cusp of another golden age. Squarely in the middle of this Bingham County gold rush is incoming senior Madison Torgerson. Known as “Madi” by just about everyone but the tax man, Torgerson has fully committed to her role as the leading thrower on the Cougars’ roster. Torgerson has helped Firth finish first and second at state the past two seasons, respectively. “Sometimes I run over to the track for myself and I’ve seen Madi working at the throwing pits by herself,” Firth track and field coach Bob Lambert said. “Madi has taken her commitment to another level this year.” Madi defended her 2025 state shot put title with a school-record push at the 2026 championships in Middleton, reaching 40 feet, 3½ inches — the only girls thrower to break the 40-foot barrier in Firth history. As an encore, she
