California UPS Driver Shot, Killed While In Truck On Break; Suspect Arrested

On Thursday, a UPS driver was fatally shot multiple times in his work truck in Irvine, according to police reports.

The Irvine Police Department received a call shortly after 3 p.m. regarding a man being shot near Chrysler and Bendix. A police spokesperson informed NBC4 that a UPS truck was implicated in the incident and that the driver had died as a result of the shooting.

Following the shooting, authorities found a pickup truck that matched the description of a suspect vehicle provided by witnesses. The driver of the pickup truck, located along State Route 261 and Santiago Canyon Road, has refused to leave the vehicle and is currently barricaded inside.

Following unsuccessful attempts to persuade the suspected gunman to exit the truck, law enforcement resorted to deploying gas and a K-9 unit. By 6:30 p.m., authorities successfully took the individual into custody.

Rhean Fontanoza, aged 46, was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 50-year-old UPS driver Expedito Cuesta De Leon, who was also from Aliso Viejo, as per the Irvine Police Department.

Information regarding the events leading up to the shooting was not readily available. While the motive behind the incident remains undefined, law enforcement officials do not believe the violence was a result of a robbery, as nothing was reported missing from the UPS truck.
