IRON STATION, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — An Iron Station Army veteran will be receiving a brand new home at no cost.

Purple Heart Homes and Love Our Veterans are teaming up to make the veteran’s dream come true, which started Tuesday morning on Devine Road.

The plan was initially to replace the roof, but officials say the home was too unstable. That’s why they’re tearing the entire home down and rebuilding it, free of charge.

“To be able to give a gift like this, because of all of our grant partners and community partners, to a man who has that incredible heart, that feeling is indescribable,” Devin Alexander of Purple Heart Homes said. “I appreciate him for his service, and I appreciate the community for making this happen for him.”

The homeowner, Donald Surratt, served as a military police officer during the Vietnam War. He also devoted himself to caring for his son, who fought muscular dystrophy until his recent passing.
