Every school is different in its approach to the college football transfer portal. Some schools make “all-in” pushes to gain commitments, while others lean on the portal to fill any needs they’re not already developing within the program.

Entering his 26th season at the helm of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Kirk Ferenz laid out his approach to using the transfer portal following the team’s Spring Game in late April.

“Yeah, I mean, we’ll do anything we can to help our team,” Kirk Ferentz said after Iowa’s annual spring scrimmage. “So we’ll be looking at [the transfer portal] and studying it and if there’s an opportunity that presents itself, that makes sense, we’ll consider it. We plan to do that every year.”

Iowa could be looking for quarterback depth in the transfer portal after Deacon Hill and Tommy Poholsky departed. Cade McNamara is still recovering from ACL surgery. The Hawkeyes also have redshirt sophomore Marco Lainez, who completed just seven passes in 2023. The departure of Hill and Poholsky leaves Iowa with just those two scholarship players at the position.

The Hawkeyes are coming off a 10-4 season and an appearance in the Big Ten Championship for the second time in three seasons, so the program hopes the recent success will aid its draw in the transfer portal over the summer.
