INDIANAPOLIS — An Indy man has been convicted of attempted murder and other felony charges after being found guilty following a two-day trial this week of shooting and critically injuring a woman two years ago.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced the conviction of Bernard McGuire following a two-day trial in Marion Superior Court 28 Wednesday afternoon.

McGuire was convicted of murder (level 1 felony), aggravated battery (level 3 felony) and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felony (level 4 felony). McGuire was also found guilty of the habitual offender enhancement and the firearms enhancement during the two-day trial.

According to MCPO, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched on Jan. 2, 2022, to the 4300 block of Village Parkway Circle in response to reports that a person had been shot.

Officers arrived and found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck and transported the victim to an area hospital in critical condition.

MCPO added that detectives spoke with a neighbor who stated the victim knocked on their door requesting assistance and that 911 be called. The neighbor reportedly told detectives that they observed McGuire flee from the area in a blue Dodge Challenger.

As McGuire fled, the victim reportedly pointed and told the neighbor, “he shot me,” according to MCPO.

McGuire was soon apprehended after officers located a blue Dodge Challenger matching the vehicle description and initiated a traffic stop. McGuire was detained and transported to the aggravated assault office.

The victim later informed detectives that she was visiting McGuire at his apartment where the pair were taking down a Christmas tree together. After that, they started watching a movie together before McGuire went into his room, returned with a rifle and allegedly shot the woman before telling her, “I didn’t mean to do that,” according to MCPO.

McGuire has a sentencing hearing scheduled for June 20 at 1 p.m.
