Flood watches in effect in central Arizona as Halloween storms begin

Rain spread across Phoenix and Arizona yet again Friday, Oct. 30, as a low pressure trough over the Pacific Ocean brings two opportunities for rain over the weekend and a series of alerts regarding the active weather. It seems poised to skip over the main event for most: Halloween. Thundershowers moved in Friday morning, Oct. 30, and a shortwave energy and abundant moisture produced showers and storms throughout the day. Rain totals pushed past half an inch in many areas of the Valley and an inch or more was recorded in some gauges on the outer edges. A new round of storms hit with the evening rush hour, reducing visibility in some parts of the north Valley. Later models have picked up on a linear look to how the storms will travel, moving from southwest to northeast. Northwestern Arizona and parts of Yavapai County could start to see thunderstorms as business hours open, then activity explodes heading into lunchtime, spreading southward to western Maricopa through Pima counties. PHOENIX, ARIZONA — Isolated severe thunderstorms are a concern in two very different parts of the country: central and southern Arizona and the middle coast of Texas. The Storm Prediction Center placed both areas under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather, covering a zone from the Phoenix area south through Tucson to the Mexico border, and a smaller area along the Texas coast near Victoria, Port Lavaca and Matagorda Bay. General thunderstorms are also spreading across a wide part of the country, from the Desert Southwest and Rockies to the central Plains, the Gulf Coast and South Florida. The storms are arriving as an atmospheric river pushes near-record moisture into the Southwest, keeping flash flooding a major concern.

Heavy rains expected to bring flooding risk to already saturated parts of the US Southwest

Heavy rains starting Saturday evening were expected to bring a threat of flash flooding to already saturated areas of the U.S. Southwest through Monday, according to the National Weather Service. As much as 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain could fall across the region, where a number of weather systems have brought a deadly autumn of soaking rains. Several people were rescued from floodwaters Friday in Arizona and Nevada. “It’s not going to take much rainfall to be impactful at all in some of these locations just because of how saturated they are,” said Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for nearly all of Arizona and parts of southern Utah, southwestern Colorado, and western New Mexico, in addition to part of southern Nevada. Those watches include the Four Corners region, a sparsely populated area where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet that has been hit especially hard by recent rains. Santorelli said this weekend's rain was expected to bring both flash flooding and small-stream flooding.
