Beyond bread / The art of making toast
A piece of toast is like an artist’s canvas in the food industry. Whether that’s starting from scratch and making homemade bread yourself or just topping a good quality slice with lots of olive oil and flaky salt, there really isn’t a toast-making rulebook. There’s a lot to explore with toasting a slice of bread — it can be sweet, savory, or a bit of both. In Toledo, toast offerings often expand from the classic bread and butter, showcasing that as an industry, food can be memorable in the simplest of forms.

Gun violence awareness event builds community and solidarity
Less than six months after returning from U.S. Army deployment in 2010, Dr. Heather Vincil lost her platoon sergeant to self-inflicted gun violence. She explained that while people often imagine gun violence as being gang-related or tied to homicides, over 50 percent of all gun-related deaths in 2022 were caused by suicide. “Gun violence is a public health crisis endangering the lives, safety, and mental health of our community,” said Dr. Vincil, the regional director for care coordination of Harbor Behavioral Services and a board member of the Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Dr. Vincil was one of many featured speakers at a Friday event hosted by Toledo Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense. The event, held at the Peace and Healing Commons, was organized to commemorate National Gun Violence Awareness Day and kick off Wear Orange Weekend. The Commons was transformed into a beacon of orange T-shirts, banners, signs, and tablecloths as community members gathered to listen to advocates and survivors. Attendees were invited to write who they wear orange for on hand-painted signs.

Former Ohio State football coach finds a new home
Perry Eliano had a short stint as Ohio State’s safeties coach for two seasons in 2022 and 2023, but after his initial contract was up the Buckeyes made no effort to resign the defensive backs coach. Expectations were high for him as Ohio State stole him from Cincinnati, where he was the cornerbacks coach and developed stars like Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, but apparently Ryan Day was not satisfied with the product produced in Columbus during Eliano’s two-year tenure.

‘No panic button,’ Texas A&M senior catcher Jackson Appel reflects on beating Oregon
The No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team beat Oregon by a final score of 10-6 on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bell Park to begin the Bryan-College Station Super Regional. “We know that we’ve got guys like Chris that are going to come in and they’re gonna dominate. No worries, like that game could easily stay at six the rest of the game for Oregon,” explained senior catcher Jackson Appel. “There was no panic button from the offense. We’ve done it before. We had like Georgia down 9-0 in the first inning earlier in the year and I think we run-ruled them that game. Just not hitting the panic button, staying good, that’s why we wear these shirts. Just finding a way and never hitting the panic button offensively.” Appel was 3-for-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored against the Ducks.
