Village of Whitehouse announces 2024 Summer Concert Series
WHITEHOUSE, Ohio (WTVG) - The Village of Whitehouse has announced its 2024 Summer Concert Series. Organizers say the concerts will take place on the third Thursday in May, June and July from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Whitehouse Village Park. In addition to the concerts, there will also be food trucks, vendors and activities which begin at 5 p.m.
Local comedy film to premier Thursday
A full-length coming-of-age comedy made in northwest Ohio will premiere Thursday at the Maumee Indoor Theater. Since he was a teen, Johnny Antonini, 28, originally from Sylvania, had tossed around the idea of making a film about a young kid getting a job as a lifeguard during the summer season, an idea fueled by his regular summer job during high school and college. Filmed in part at the Sylvania Country Club, The Lifeguards is Mr. Antonini’s first feature-length film. “The dream has always been to direct and make films, but how to get there,” Mr. Antonini said.
Jazz Collective to celebrate its one-year anniversary
The Jazz Collective, a running series of free, weekly jazz concerts on the outskirts of downtown Toledo, is marking its one-year anniversary with a special show from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Toledo Club. Jazz Collective creator Andre Wright, a local jazz drummer, said it’s a dual-purpose event. It also marks the end of this year’s National Jazz Appreciation Month, he said. Jazz Appreciation Month was created by the Smithsonian Museum of American History in 2001 to celebrate the heritage and history of jazz. “As a truly American art form, jazz's soulful and rich culture dates back to the 1890s. The roots of jazz can be found in the blues,” the National Jazz Appreciation Month website states.
Author shares memoir about gun violence, land and Indigenous women’s lives
With storytelling that intertwines personal and cultural trauma, author Toni Jensen shares accounts of gun violence, stolen land, and Indigenous women’s lives. Her critically acclaimed Carry: A Memoir of Survival on Stolen Land was named a New York Times Editors’ Choice Book. “It's not an anti-gun book,” Ms. Jensen said. “It's a book about both historic and contemporary land, violence, and issues with guns and gun culture.” The memoir-in-essays offers a personal narrative in conjunction with researched accounts, also shining a light on other matters such as the issues of indigenous people, and how trauma suffered by ancestors is carried down with repercussions still felt by today’s generations.
Local celebrities raise money, awareness for Toledo Streets Newspaper
TOLEDO, Ohio — "Buy a paper!" It's a call that can be heard throughout Toledo from vendors for Toledo Streets Newspaper. WTOL 11's Amanda Fay put on the iconic reflective vest and held up the paper alongside vendor Linda Kolinski. She's the top vendor for TSN. Her record is 352 papers sold in one week.

Toledo Zoo tasting has Cinco de Mayo theme
The Tequila and Tapas event Friday provides Toledo Zoo visitors with the chance to get an early start on marking Cinco de Mayo. Those in attendance will get to sample a variety of tequilas as well as gourmet small plates. Stations will be positioned throughout the north side of the zoo. Tickets are $90 for zoo members and $95 for nonmembers and include “admission, parking, six tequila and food tasting samples, custom glassware with a signature drink, live entertainment and more,” according to an internet posting.
