Athens Halloween 2026: In photos
ATHENS, Ohio — Athens residents took to the streets for the city’s annual Halloween celebrations Saturday. The Halloween Block Party, which has taken place since 1974, has grown into a cornerstone for Ohio University students and Athens residents alike. Saturday’s festivities included a Family Friendly Block Party for Athens’ youngest from 1-4 p.m., along with an uptown trick-or-treat sponsored by businesses in Uptown Athens. The family-friendly festivities culminated with Passion Works Studio’s 15th annual Honey for the Heart parade, before being followed by several hours of live music at the Uptown Block Party, which lasted until 12:30 a.m. Among those who attended the festivities were Mayor Steve Patterson and Service-Safety Director Andy Stone, who watched the Honey for the Heart parade from the corner of Court and Washington Street. It’s a far cry from the 1970s and ‘80s, when Athens’ city government discouraged people from taking part in Halloween celebrations. The local government went so far as to place full page ads in newspapers telling people not to come to Athens during Halloween. However, the city soon realized Halloween was an economic boon for businesses in Athens. The city then began officially-sanctioned Halloween celebrations—complete with live music and bandstands—to capitalize.
