Virginia State Police to target violations on I-95 May 16-17
The Virginia State Police is launching its Operation DISSrupt initiative this month, targeting four causes of fatal and serious injury crashes along the I-95 corridor. The May 16-17 campaign will focus on enforcement of violations involving distracted driving, impaired driving, speed, and seat belt usage, with an aim to prevent any fatal crashes on the interstate during the two-day period. (The first letter of each of the four offenses combine to help create the DISSrupt moniker.) Officials also hope to reduce by at least 10% the total number of crashes on Virginia interstates during the year.

Henrico Police seek suspect who shot 2 dogs in Highland Springs
Henrico Police released surveillance video and asked for help finding a man believed to be involved in a violent incident outside a Henrico home. “On Sunday, May 5, 2024, at approximately 4:10 p.m., Henrico Police responded to the 100 block of Elsing Green Way for a reported shooting. Once on scene, officers spoke with the caller who reported hearing gunfire and went in his backyard and found two of his dogs injured,” a Henrico Police spokesperson said.

Broadband extension project in Eastern Henrico earns $725k in federal funding
Henrico County’s effort to ensure broadband access for all county residents and businesses is getting a boost from the federal government. During a press conference Monday at the Varina Area Library, U.S. Representative Jennifer McClellan (D-4th District) formally presented a check for $725,000 to county officials – money that will match an identical investment from the county and complete the funding for a $6.5-million effort to extend broadband internet capacity to the far reaches of the Varina District.

Virginia officials are instructing health care providers to start keeping track of “adverse events” involving children and teens being exposed to cannabis products. In an April 24 letter to clinicians, State Health Commissioner Karen Shelton said her agency had received enough reports of minors getting sick from products containing CBD and THC, chemical compounds found in cannabis, that the state was establishing a “special surveillance system” to keep tabs on the issue.
