For the second year in a row, diners crowned Terra Kitchen & Cocktails as the winner of Birmingham’s third annual burger competition. It was a close competition, Birmingham Shopping District officials and organizers of the event said. Overall, nearly 10,000 votes came in. Terra Kitchen & Cocktails’ Michigan Reserve burger garnered the highest combined rating and votes from diners, earning the restaurant Birmingham Best Burger title of the third annual event. The eatery’s Michigan Reserve burger is a 45-day house-ground, dry-aged beef blend with cherry wood-smoked pork belly, aged Michigan cheddar, Guernsey buttermilk crispy onions, dressed arugula, savory bourbon cherry jus, Traverse City cherry and a Mammoth Bourbon toasted sesame bun served with steakhouse potato wedges. Randy Foumia, owner of Terra Kitchen & Cocktails, said in a news release that participating was a “fun way to connect with the community and introduce new guests to Terra.” “Winning for the second year in a row speaks to our team's consistency and the incredible support of our guests,” Foumia said. 5 Best Restaurants in Ann Arbor, Michigan You Need to Try Before Everyone Else Finds Them

Ann Arbor, Michigan — a city where the red-brick streets pulse with the footsteps of students and professors, where the Huron River winds through neighborhoods stitched with memory and hope, where murals bloom on alley walls and the scent of coffee, curry, and barbecue drifts through the air. Here, the architecture is a patchwork: Victorian homes with wraparound porches, glassy new towers, and the gentle sprawl of parks and gardens. Ann Arbor is a crossroads — of old-timers and new arrivals, of artists, engineers, and dreamers, of families who picnic on the Diag and musicians who busk beneath the sycamores.

Dead or trapped pests found at Garden City eatery

Recent health inspections in some Garden City restaurants found accumulations of insects on insect traps and more between September and October, according to Wayne County Health Department inspection reports. Many of the violations have been corrected. The presence of violations in a past inspection does not necessarily mean the establishment has the same violations today. Inspection reports can be found at swordsolutions.com/inspections/. Below is a list of violations found at a few restaurants in Garden City. Great China Garden, 32293 Ford Road During a routine inspection on September 18, an inspector noted several problems at Great China Garden. ∎ Observed two bottles of powdered lye for floor drain cleaning near the dishwashing area. The bottles of lye state that they are for industrial use only, and warnings on the manufacturer's label indicate to keep this product away from kitchens due to its poisonous and fatal nature if swallowed. Poisonous or toxic materials shall be used according to the manufacturer's directions included in labeling and, for a pesticide, the manufacturer's label instructions that state that use is allowed in a food establishment. Remove all lye from the facility and discontinue use of lye for floor drain cleaning immediately. During inspection, the

Abdul El-Sayed is for 'shawarma law'. Where to try his favorite, others

Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. El-Sayed during the conversation then recommended Detroit-area shawarma shop Amo Samis , which operates several locations throughout southeast Michigan. "I want to explain what the tenets of shawarma law are. If you get a shawarma and it's got lettuce in it, it's not shawarma, it's just a sandwich. Someone has lied to you," El-Sayed said on the food. What makes for good shawarma? If you've already tried El-Sayed's favorite, here's a look at five other places to try to the food first created in Turkey. More: El-Sayed calls Vance habibi in victory speech. What does it mean? What is shawarma? Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish made from thin slices of marinated meat — usually chicken, beef, lamb,
