Aderman Hall pool currently needs $475,000 in repairs
The 112-year-old Aderman Hall pool at West Hills is in need of some updating. About 5,500 or more people use the West Hills pool annually for swimming lessons, water aerobics, family open swim and rentals, along with trainings for lifeguards and water safety instructors. “There’s really no practical indoor replacement in Owatonna for a pool,” Facilities and Fleet Director Patrick McDermott told the city council during its Wednesday study session. “The only other option — especially in the wintertime — would be the Owatonna Middle School, and that really does not have good access.” When the West Hills pool had to close in the spring for repairs, the local hotels with pools were contacted about availability for swimming lessons. “We got three responses with limited or no availability, and the remaining six did not respond,” McDermott said. “I think they just didn’t want the liability of making that a public pool within a hotel would be our assumption on that.” Large pool repairs history After its construction in 1914, the West Hills pool went about 84 years without record of major repairs. In 1998, a fiberglass pool liner was installed. In 2003, and ADA-compliant restroom and lift were installed thanks

Faribault goes blue for Johnson; Finstad calls for recount
With a margin of just 322 votes in the midterm election, Democratic candidate Jake Johnson outperformed incumbent U.S. Rep. Brad Finstad, MN-1, by more than 600 votes in the City of Faribault, helping to propel him to a small lead in a race that is awaiting recount. Johnson claimed victory Wednesday, while Finstad waited until Thursday to release a statement seeking a recount permissible under Minnesota law due to the margin of victory being under 0.25%. If the totals don’t change, it will be the first time a Democratic candidate has won in the state’s 1st Congressional District since Tim Walz in 2018, and the first time since 2020 that the party won Faribault. The most recent data from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office shows Johnson with a lead of 322 votes with all 750 Minnesota counties reporting. In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Finstad called for the recount process to proceed. “The vote total in our race currently reflects less than one-half of (the recount) threshold. We will allow the recount process to proceed and await the results,” Finstad said. The Republican has represented the district, which includes the entire southern border of the state, since 2022.
