Newton School Board Learns Of Dispute Between Companies Working At Aurora Heights Elementary School
An impasse between the contractor finishing up the renovations and building addition at Newton’s Aurora Heights Elementary School and a subcontractor could jeopardize the building being ready to accommodate students when the school year starts in late August. The Newton School Board and Superintendent Tom Messinger learned of the dispute between Graphite Construction of Des Moines and R3 Roofing and Exteriors of Urbandale during Monday night’s School Board Meeting. An attorney for the company said Graphite has informed her client that they will not honor the contract with the subcontractor due to several disputes between the two companies, so R3 Roofing and Exteriors has stopped working on the project until the disputes are resolved. She added the main work the company has left to complete is the installation of the composite wall panels around the gym, the new entryway, and the interior vestibule. R3 Roofing and Exterior’s attorney urged the school district to put pressure on Graphite Construction to resolve the issues in a timely manner, so the project can be completed in time for the start of the school year.

Newman Catholic tops Moravia to claim 1A Iowa state baseball crown
CARROLL — Logan Vaske made sure to put a big exclamation point on Newman Catholic's eighth state baseball championship. Vaske smacked a grand slam against Moravia in the Class 1A state baseball championship game on July 24, capping a fifth-inning explosion that propelled the Knights to an 11-1 victory in six innings at Merchants Park. The junior came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Newman Catholic had already scored three runs in the inning, but Vaske was trying to make a statement when he stepped up to the plate. He got a hold of a pitch from Moravia reliever Blake Ewing and sent a shot to left field. The ball carried over the fence and sent the Newman Catholic dugout and crowd into a frenzy. "I just swung the bat and got out in front of it," Vaske said. "I didn't even feel the ball and I took it away." It was Vaske's first home run of the season. He knew he had delivered the final nail in Moravia's coffin. "I knew we were winning after that," Vaske said. "Probably the greatest feeling I've ever had." More: Iowa high school state baseball

Moravia ends North Linn’s baseball season in Class 1A semifinals
CARROLL — They beat the second-ranked team in the substate finals. They beat the top-ranked team in the state tournament quarterfinals. Beating No. 9 Wednesday afternoon must have seemed like nothing. Of course, that’s pure folly, an absurd statement. Any win is a great win, especially in the postseason. But What the Moravia Mohawks have done in their last three games has been special. Unranked, seeded eighth and not having a whole bunch of people paying attention to them quite honestly, they beat North Linn, 5-2, in a Class 1A semifinal at Merchants Park. That’s 24 consecutive wins for Moravia (29-4). The school has never had a state championship team in any sport, but that could change Friday afternoon. It plays either Mason City Newman or South Winneshiek for it all. Those two teams played a late Wednesday night semifinal. “(Just do the) same thing they’ve been doing all year. Just keep playing hard,” Moravia Coach Bill Huisman said. “I tell you what, these guys have a lot of intensity about them. They play hard, they hustle, they never give up. They’re always pulling.” “They’re a good ballclub,” North Linn Coach Justin Kress said. “I don’t know how they’re not
