Questions still remain from dog attack
Tensions spiked at the May 10 county law enforcement committee meeting over the handling of a February dog bite incident in the city of Medford. On February 5, eight-year-old Logan Chaffee was playing with his brother and a neighbor girl in their yard when a neighbor’s dog escaped its yard and attacked Logan. A passerby stopped the attack and returned the animal to its yard, but the animal escaped again and began chasing another youth who was riding a scooter.

Cornell City Council - ATVs/UTVs a step closer to entering Cornell from west

To help with that, the Cornell City Council approved an amendment May 2, to Ordinance 24-3, allowing for ATV/UTV travel from Park Road to County Hwy. CC.
Lions cheese curd sale kicks off busy summer
The Stanley Lions Club, at their May 13 meeting, planned a summer of activities. Kicking off a busy summer will be the Lions Annual Cheese Curd Sale, which will take place on May 30, May 31 and June 1. The sale will coincide with the Stanley City Wide Thrift Sales and will be held at Soo Park, across from the Post Office.
Jump River museum to open
The Jump River Valley Historical Society has announced its summer museum opening schedule. The museum will open for the season on June 8 to coincide with the 57th Lumberman’s Day festival in Catawba. The museum is scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, which are June 8 and 22, July 13 and 27, and Aug. 10 and 24. Check out the 2025 display, “Thanks For the Memories!” at the museum located at W9224 U.S. 8 in Catawba. David Plummer: Bringing Stanley’s past to life
David Plummer hails from one of the oldest families to settle in Stanley, Wisconsin. Son of Don and Twila Plummer, Plummer fondly remembers growing up working at his parents’ hardware store, Coast to Coast, with his two siblings, Michele and Bruce. He graduated from Stanley-Boyd High School in 1976 and earned his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Development with a minor in Product Development from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Plummer went on to work as a technical leader at Anderson Windows where he was involved in creating many product designs and won various awards including the Governor’s Award (Minnesota) for Universal Product Design with his design for a sliding window handle that was usable by people with various dexterity abilities. Retired for the last two years, Plummer currently lives in Hudson with his wife, Jeanette, where they enjoy spending time with their children Christopher and Catelynn and their families and embarking on new adventures together.
Chippewa County hires another courthouse security officer
CHIPPEWA FALLS — Instead of remodeling the Chippewa County Courthouse to create a single point of entry, the Chippewa County Board unanimously approved hiring a second security officer to patrol the courthouse. The new position will be listed as a Jailer II, allowing the person to be a sworn officer and carry a gun, and would cost about $110,000 between wages, benefits and other costs. The county’s Executive Committee already unanimously approved hiring the additional officer. ...
Aspirus Health adds two oncology clinicians at Medford
MEDFORD – Aspirus Health recently added two new clinicians to its cancer care services at Aspirus Medford Hospital and Clinic. Thomas Oliver, DO, earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, Pennsylvania. He completed an internal medicine fellowship at Lankenau Medical Center, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, Arizona. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Graduates bid farewell to Stanley-Boyd May 10
The Stanley-Boyd Class of 2024 is out the school door. Convening in the Stanley-Boyd High School gymnasium after a forecast of bad weather and intermittent rain Friday, the 74 seniors walked in procession from behind the stage, down either side of the gym, towards the center aisle, and up to their designated seating area, all to “Pomp and Circumstance” by Edward Elgar. Event MCs Dakota Derks and Olivia Osvold welcomed fellow graduates and other attendees to the packed graduation ceremony, then introducing high school principal Tanya Mahr for the welcome address.
Man who led police on high-speed chase sentenced to two months jail
CHIPPEWA FALLS — An Eau Claire man convicted of drunk driving and fleeing from authorities in May 2023 will serve a two-month jail sentence. Paul W. Smith, 62, 3006 W. Cameron St., pleaded no contest Tuesday in Chippewa County Court to OWI-3 and fleeing or eluding an officer. Dorchester declines to pay resident over lift station project complaints
An ongoing discussion between the village and a landowner whose land was affected by the Dorchester lift station project that started in 2022 and was completed last year reached a breaking point at the village’s board meeting on May 8.
