Toledo looks to boost civic engagement after BGSU study
Before Toledo City Councilman Erin Kramer took her oath of office, she was an average citizen looking for ways to get involved with her community. So she applied to be on Lucas County’s citizen levy review committee. “I filled out the application, and I was excited because I did want to get more involved and learn how our county government works,” she said. In her role on the nine-member committee, she reviewed requests by agencies and organizations to place countywide tax levies on the ballot. The board serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of County Commissioners. She credits her time on the committee for keeping her engaged with local government and sparking her interest to run for an elected position. Like Ms. Kramer, many Toledo residents want to be civically engaged, but data shows residents aren’t aware of opportunities, according to a study conducted by Bowling Green State University’s Center for Regional Development. BGSU looks at civic engagement in Toledo The center conducted a mixed-method study on Toledo’s civic engagement process through interviews with city employees and chairmen of the commissions as well as surveys of Toledo residents and commission liaisons. “The broader survey is really to understand

Farmers market might stay at Franklin Park if sales rebound from slow start
The Westgate Farmers Market, despite its name, is now at Franklin Park Mall and is having a slower-than-usual start to the season. However, organizers and vendors say the new location at the mall’s Sylvania Avenue entrance gets more car traffic, has a better parking lot, and gives the market room to grow; some are even hopeful the mall will become the market’s permanent location. It’s been three weeks since the market opened at the new location, where it moved because of construction on two large shopping centers near Central and Secor roads: Westgate Village North and the Village at Secor . The parking lot that hosted the market is being torn up for future construction. So far, the only thing that’s lacking at the Franklin Park location is customers. Vendors and organizers gave several reasons: The weather was less than ideal for the first few weeks, farmers don’t yet have produce to sell, and the word hasn’t gotten out about the Franklin Park location. The farmers market is trying to spread the word through social media, but organizer Gini Behrendt said it might take some time to catch on. So far, she hasn’t had many complaints from vendors or customers.
