Jeter Paving, a longtime family business in Washington County, ceased operations last year, and a liquidation auction for its equipment is being held Thursday.

Office Manager Erika Hudson said the family company's most recent owner, her father Ronald Clark Jeter, is retiring this summer.

Henry Houston Jeter founded H.H. Jeter Paving in the 1950s on High Street in Hagerstown, Hudson said. Ronald Houston Jeter, one of Henry H. Jeter's sons, incorporated the company in 1972 and moved it to its current location near Funkstown in the early 1980s.

The business has had other owners in the family, the latest being Ronald Clark Jeter, who is one of Ronald Houston Jeter's sons.

Jeter Paving focused on residential projects, doing a lot of work in the Smithsburg area, Hudson said. The company installed driveways for several residential developments and did parking lot work.

"We would definitely like to take the opportunity, as a family, to thank the community, the other businesses we worked with and the homeowners and businesses we had the opportunity to work for over the years," Erika Hudson said.

Jeter Paving sponsored several youth athletic teams over the years, including teams with Valley Little League in Chewsville, Smithsburg Little Sluggers and soccer teams. The company also supported athletics at Smithsburg High School. There was a Jeter race car for a while that participated in races at Hagerstown Speedway.

J.G. Cochran Auctioneers & Associates will hold the auction live and online starting at 9:30 a.m. at Jeter Paving at 1445 Oak Ridge Place off East Oak Ridge Drive near Funkstown, according to an auction notice. Items for sale include dump trucks, pickup trucks, trailers and asphalt equipment.

The property is not part of the auction, but sold separately, Hudson said.

Cluck’n Around BBQ food truck will be at the auction, she said.

New firearms, gunsmithing shop in Cavetown area

Hagerstown resident Chris Chaney opened CC Firearms & Cerakote at 22030 Jefferson Boulevard, by Rocky's New York Pizza and Italian Restaurant, last year.

In addition to selling firearms, Chaney said he also does gunsmith work including repairs and maintenance. This includes repairing older and antique guns. The shop also sells hunting rifles, bows, crossbows and more recently, upon customer requests, bows for fishing invasive species such as snakeheads.

His son, Skyler Chaney, has joined the business. A 2020 graduate of the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, Skyler Chaney does custom engraving work for guns and uses a 3D printer to build certain items, his father said.

They also apply Cerakote ceramic coatings to items including firearms, car mufflers and pistons, Chris Chaney said.

An Air Force veteran, Chaney said the shop also offers conceal carry and basic pistol courses for a fee and will offer a free defensive class for women this summer.

The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, except it is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Meritus Health breaks ground on medical student housing complex

Meritus Health officials, along with community leaders and supporters, celebrated a groundbreaking Thursday evening for a student housing complex for the proposed Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine along the east side of Hagerstown.

Meritus Commons will have 340 one- and two-bedroom apartments, a commons area, a club house and a dog park, according to a Meritus Health release.

The first 90 apartments are expected to be done in time for the proposed medical school's first class to move in during the summer of 2025 before the fall semester begins, according to Meritus Health.

The student housing complex is being built on land off Mount Aetna Road, between Ruth Ann Monroe Primary School and Children's Village of Washington County. It will be about a quarter-mile from the school's main building and be accessible via a walking trail.

"As we discussed our vision for the school, it was so clear that we wanted to provide a full campus experience for our students. It is essential that the students live here in Washington County," Dr. Paula Gregory, dean of the proposed medical school, said in the release. "By planting firm roots in our community, our hope and vision is that students will stay and practice medicine here and will love this community as much as we do."

Dave Lehr, chief operating officer for the proposed medical school, said in the release that the housing complex "is a critically important part of developing a world-class medical school in our community.

"We aim to attract the best medical students in the country to our program," Lehr said. "Part of attending medical school is living on campus, becoming part of the community and having access to all of the support that’s needed to thrive through such an arduous program."

The school is referred to as a proposed medical school because Meritus is still in the accreditation process, which is on track to meet the goal of opening for students in the fall of 2025.
