HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) — Parents of students from two Tri-State school systems are filing lawsuits after they say bullying has taken a toll on their kids’ mental health.

Parents of Muhlenberg and Henderson County students tell us they are taking legal action.

They claim the school corporations are not doing enough to protect their children from bullying.

“This fight is not just for my baby, it’s for all of these children,” said Dominiqui Milan.

Parents say the schools in question are North Middle School in Henderson and Muhlenberg South Middle School in Greenville.

Several parents we spoke with say they filed complaints including Dominiqui Milan.

“Calling her names, making fun of her saying things like that is why your parents don’t love you.”

Milan says her daughter is a victim, and even pulled her out of school after she says bullies teased her about her dad’s death.

African American Coalition of Hopkins County says it’s supporting the families through the lawsuits.

In a statement to Eyewitness News, the coalition says bullying “has become somewhat of an epidemic throughout the Tri-State. In some cases it should be labeled gang bullying because in many cases, you have multiple students bullying one student. School officials have not done enough.”

Sean Wimberly Senior is the attorney representing several of the families. Although he could not go into detail about the lawsuits, he says his goal is not to show the schools in a negative light.

Wimberly says he wants to help the families and schools to ensure the students get the education they deserve.

“The individuals that work in the school system are great individuals. And we want to make sure before any lawsuits are filed that the work is done.”

Eyewitness News reached out to Henderson County Schools and Muhlenberg County Public Schools. We are waiting to hear back.
