Opinion: The mailroom has become Grinnell’s boulder
It is Friday. It is 4:02 p.m. My last class of the day has just concluded. I cannot go pick up my package. After a weekend spent in solemn desire of the package wasting away in Red GB or Brown NF, I rush to the mailroom on Monday after lunch to find a line of dozens of other Grinnellians, each waiting for a piece of their home or a letter from a long lost love to be plucked off the shelves and brought to us. Waiting in that line, I wonder: Is this some sort of punishment from the universe? What have I done to deserve this?

New superintendent balances duties in two school districts
MARENGO — Being superintendent of two school districts at the same time is new to Derek Philips, but with supportive school boards and communities, he’s figuring out the new concept. “It’s interesting,” said Philips, who took the reins of Iowa Valley and English Valleys School Districts this summer. Scheduling can be tricky, but Philips lets the staff know where he plans to be each day of the week. He always includes an asterisk and the words “subject to change.” Ultimately people don’t care where he is, said Philips. He’s available to both schools by phone and email if he’s not in the building. “I’m always available.” Though Philips has to spread his time between two districts, he still has to complete all the administrative duties for each one,. “It’s not 50/50. It’s 100/100,” said Philips. The road to Iowa County “I grew up in Van Buren County,” said Philips. He always knew he wanted to be a teacher. Though he had no family in education, two teachers inspired him to choose that vocation — fourth grade teacher Mark Church and math teacher Vicki Shepard. Tutoring during high school fed his decision to teach. He graduated from the University of Northern

West Fork takes down West Hancock to claim first district title
The #9 (A) West Fork Warhawks are district champions for the first time in school history following a victory over West Hancock on Friday night. The Warhawks headed into Week 7 with a tall task to win the district championship as West Hancock was attempting to defend their back-to-back district championships. Adding pressure to the night was a group of Warhawk seniors who have experienced three straight losses to the Eagles, being outscored by a combined 143-20 over the past three seasons. Head Coach Dan Westhoff says the success of a district championship has been the culmination of several people committing to a common goal.

High School Football Roundup: Kennedy skates past Waterloo West
Finally, Waterloo West got off to a great start. Unfortunately, Cedar Rapids Kennedy recovered quickly, scoring a 42-9 victory over the Wahawks on Friday at Memorial Stadium in Waterloo. Paul Kaump rushed for 140 yards and two scores on 23 carries and caught four passes for 54 yards to pace Kennedy (4-3). But Kennedy followed with a quick drive that resulted in a 29-yard touchdown completion from Cael Fairley to Kingston Johnson to tie it 7-all just 1 minute and 37 seconds later. The Cougars then turned a muffed punt by West into a Kaump touchdown run. West caught a break when a bad snap sailed over Fairley’s head and out of bounds for a safety with 9:42 left in the second. But Kennedy quarterback Kaden Gomez scored on a 9-yard run with 24 seconds left in the half as the Cougars led 21-9 at the half. Kennedy opened the second half with a long drive, using
