Michigan State faces 'ethical minefield' as donors pay president's salary

Donors paying a university president's salary raise is nothing out of the ordinary, but the way Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz is being paid is raising questions about potential conflicts of interest and who the president is actually accountable to. Experts in university presidential salaries and university governance who spoke to The Detroit News said they had never seen anything like the limited liability corporation, or LLC, created and organized by two prominent MSU donors: Ben Maibach and Alan Ross. The LLC, called the Presidential Spartan Fund, gives Guskiewicz's office $500,000 annually through gifts from 20 donors, increasing his salary to $1.5 million annually. It's not unusual for private philanthropy to subsidize a president's salary, said Armand Alacbay, the senior vice president of strategy for the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, which advocates for academic excellence, academic freedom and accountability at the nation's colleges and universities. However, this money normally comes through a university foundation where a board can ensure the money is being spent for the mission of the university, he said. Alacbay said the Michigan State arrangement raises questions of conflicts of interest that the university must address. "I'm at a loss on why they set

At the University of Michigan, Environmental Justice Starts With Who Gets to Decide

When Michelle Martinez talks about climate change, she does not begin with temperatures, emissions, or models and projections. She begins with people. For Martinez, the inaugural director of the Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment at the University of Michigan (U-M), climate change is already being experienced through the housing, economic, and political crises confronting communities today. And that makes climate justice inseparable from a more basic civic question: Who has the power to decide what happens to a community? The Tishman Center, established in 2021 at U-M’s School for Environment and Sustainability, was created around a particular idea of what a university can do in that struggle. Made possible through gifts from The NorthLight Foundation and Dan and Sheryl Tishman, the center connects students with environmental justice organizations and community leaders, supports community-led research, and prepares students to work on the problems communities are already facing. That model grew partly from what Martinez felt was missing during her years working in environmental justice in Detroit. “What I really needed from the university was a constant and steady support, with actionable research that could result in policy change,” she said. Communities' needs, however, rarely follow the timetable of
