Corvallis, employee union reach tentative agreement and end strike
The City of Corvallis and the union representing nearly 250 of its workers reached a tentative agreement Oct. 22, bringing an end to a six-day strike . AFSCME Local 2975 includes employees in departments including parks, public works and community development. Union leaders in a news release said the city agreed to give workers a $1,000 bonus upon ratification and that employee healthcare premium will not increase until 2030 at the earliest. The city will also add a seventh step to the wage schedule in the fourth year of the contract and update safety language, union officials said. “We are glad that we were able to come to a deal that meets most of our members’ needs, while also addressing the limitations of our city budget,” Union President Evan Newton said in a release. “I’m so proud of this union for coming together to make this happen. This is what happens when workers stand united to fight for what we deserve.” The union declared an impasse with the city Sept. 1 and its members authorized a strike Sept. 30. Employees returned to work Oct. 23. The Corvallis City Council must still ratify the agreement during its Nov. 2 meeting. Eder

Candidates Raise Concern Over Flyer; Annual Pounding; Pacific Seafood Fire
Political rhetoric is heating up on multiple fronts in Florence, causing considerable consternation among candidates running in the city’s mayoral and council races. The latest controversy involves a political mailing distributed over the weekend by Common Sense Florence PAC, targeting three candidates — Renee Lo Pilato, Sally Wantz, and Justin Ludwig. The flyer questions the candidates’ political positions, highlighting past statements concerning diversity and inclusion, environmental issues, police staffing, and political ideology. In a letter to local media organizations and the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, the three candidates characterized the mailing as misleading and personally offensive, calling for public condemnation and opportunities to respond. Meanwhile, mayoral candidate Daniel Lofy has also faced pointed criticism on social media concerning his perceived political affiliations. With the November 3rd election approaching, the tone of political discourse has increasingly become part of the election conversation itself.
