Winter Tree Identification Hike with Conservation District Forester Joe Nash
Joe Nash grew up in St. Clair, MI and has been servicing Clare and Gladwin counties as the local forester with the Clare and Gladwin Conservation Districts for nearly two years. He studied forestry at Michigan Technological University, graduating in 2020 as the “Outstanding Senior in Forestry.” After spending time in Colorado where he lived in a tent in the woods for two summers, he quickly realized his passion for the forest and ultimately continued on to complete his Master of Science degree in Forest Resource Management at SUNY ESF in Syracuse, NY. There he became involved in the research side of forest ecology, and even published a paper on mycorrhizal fungi and a another one on forest biomass during his time there, and especially found a passionate ecological niche for downed wood. Nash boasts an expansive background in data analysis, forest soils and forest ecology, forest inventories (especially pertaining to downed wood), forest biomass calculations, and mycorrhizal fungi. His heart for his work and congeniality shine through in conversation, and I never fail to learn far more than ever anticipated when having the pleasure of speaking with him or attending one of his community events.
