Soon after came the eerie haze: a ghostly veil that obscured the typically crisp, deep-blue horizon stretching across Lake Michigan. Farther north, conditions became even more surreal. For instance, motorists crossing the Mackinac Bridge slowed to 20 miles per hour with their hazard lights flashing as they drove into a dense gray wall of smoke that completely engulfed the bridge’s towering green suspension towers, according to CBS News Detroit. This was not ordinary midsummer fog, nor was it the kind of light wildfire smoke that Michiganders have experienced in years past. It was the visible sign of a vast northern wilderness on fire: smoke—carried hundreds of miles across the continent—turning the sky an eerie orange and driving people indoors due to legitimate health concerns, while forcing businesses, festivals, and community events to cancel outdoor activities. For three long days, hazardous air settled over Northern Michigan—and keeping our five children inside felt like attempting the impossible: containing five bursts of summer energy within the walls of our home. We filled the hours with board games spread across the kitchen table, movies, puzzles, and a constant search for new ways to keep restless minds occupied. When the air quality momentarily improved, we stole brief moments outside—short walks, a few minutes in the yard, a quick game of pickleball, just enough time to remind ourselves what a normal summer day was supposed to feel like, before retreating indoors again.

Though hazy skies were foreboding, the real danger lies in what we cannot see: “PM 2.5,” or fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometers across, which is about 30 times smaller than a single strand of human hair. The air quality in Lake Ann during mid-July reached the “Very Unhealthy” range (201-300), in which all individuals should avoid outdoor activity and sensitive groups should stay indoors. Why they could not ride bikes, play outside, or simply run through the grass on a warm summer day. The same sky that looked strangely beautiful at sunset carried an invisible threat—turning a season built for exploration into a lesson in patience, caution, and adaptation. Those three days were a small glimpse into a much larger reality: as wildfire smoke becomes more common across the Great Lakes region, the boundaries of “normal” childhood summers are beginning to shift. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) took the rare step of extending a sweeping, statewide Air Quality Alert for all 83 counties. Michigan was suffocating under a massive plume of atmospheric pollution. For millions of residents, the heavy air sparked a distinct sense of unease: Where is this coming from, how did it get here, and is our summer sky permanently altered? Invisible Threat in the AirAfter a day or so of smoky haze, the harsh physical reality of the dangers began to set in. Health officials warned that the real danger lies in what we cannot see: “PM 2.5,” or fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometers across, which is about 30 times smaller than a single strand of human hair.Unlike ordinary dust or pollen, these micro-particles easily bypass the filtration defenses of the human nose and throat. They slip deep into the air sacs of the lungs and cross directly into the bloodstream, triggering systemic inflammation throughout the body. For healthy adults, like me, a day spent breathing this air was accompanied by stinging eyes, a raw throat, persistent cough, and an overall feeling of exhaustion. For vulnerable populations—such as children with developing lungs, senior citizens, pregnant women, and anyone battling asthma, COPD, or heart disease—the air is exceptionally dangerous.

This video—by 12-year-old Tanner Brown in which he interviews local business owners about the effects of the Canadian wildfires locally here in Northern Michigan—is part of “Meeting Young Journalists Where They Are,” a project by the Glen Arbor Sun of Leelanau County and The Betsie Current of Benzie County, thanks to a grant from Press Forward Northern Michigan, hosted by the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. In addition to the smoke, summer heat and humidity cause the heart and lungs to work twice as hard to keep the body cool and oxygenated with clean air, while fighting a deficit of clean oxygen—both of these elevate the risk of heart-related events. How Smoke Reached Michigan The smoky veil that covered Michigan was not born from local fires. Instead, satellite imagery showed that the smoke came from complex, massive, out-of-control fires tearing through the boreal forests of western Ontario, Canada, as well as northern Minnesota. The journey of how wildfire smoke reaches Michigan is a remarkable tale of intense heat that lofts smoke into high-altitude steering currents, which carry it across the continent.• The Lofting Process: When massive wilderness fires erupt, the intense heat generates powerful, fast-rising columns of air, known as thermal updrafts. Acting like giant chimneys, these updrafts loft millions of tons of smoke and ash high into the troposphere, often several miles above the weather systems that control conditions near the ground. • The Transport: Once lofted into the upper troposphere, the smoke is carried by powerful steering winds that can transport it hundreds or even thousands of miles. In this case, a sprawling, clockwise-spinning dome of high pressure—responsible for the intense heat across the central United States—acted like an atmospheric conveyor belt. It swept the vast smoke plume eastward over Lake Superior, before curving it sharply south and channeling it directly toward Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.• The Descent: The final blow came with a weak atmospheric front drifting across the state. Instead of clearing the skies, it compressed the atmosphere, pressing the elevated smoke layer downward until it settled at ground level, where the concentrated pollution lingered in the air we breathe. The Changing NorthMany people in Northern Michigan are realizing that summer skies are becoming hazier and less predictable—and the data confirms that observation. Smoke-filled days that once seemed an exception are becoming increasingly familiar.

When the air quality momentarily improved, the Steele family stole brief moments outside—short walks, a few minutes in the yard, a quick game of pickleball, just enough time to remind themselves what a normal summer day was supposed to feel like—before retreating indoors again. But the pattern has repeated itself. Another statewide air quality emergency unfolded in late July 2025, and the summer of 2026 has once again blanketed much of Michigan in smoke and haze. What was once considered an atmospheric anomaly is becoming an increasingly familiar part of Great Lakes summers. The explanation begins hundreds of miles north of Michigan, where a powerful combination of climate-driven changes has transformed Canada’s vast boreal forest into a landscape that is increasingly primed to burn: earlier snowmelt, forests full of dead “fuel,” and more lightning. Canada, as a whole, is warming at roughly twice the global average rate of temperature, and that accelerated warming is reshaping the region in ways that make wildfires larger, more intense, and more difficult to control.Winter snowpacks are melting weeks earlier than they once did, lengthening the fire season and giving forests more time to dry out. By midsummer, soils, grasses, and fallen needles have lost much of their moisture, leaving the forest floor as combustible as kiln-dried kindling. For centuries, bitterly cold winters naturally kept destructive insects—such as the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae)—under control. Today, milder winters allow beetle populations to survive and expand, killing millions of conifer trees across western and northern Canada, and those vast stands of dead timber have become enormous reservoirs of dry fuel, enabling fires to burn hotter, spread faster, and grow to unprecedented sizes.Additionally, a warmer atmosphere holds more heat and moisture, fueling stronger thunderstorms and more frequent lightning. While human activity ignites many fires near populated areas, lightning is responsible for the overwhelming majority of acreage burned in Canada’s remote wilderness. Scientists project that lightning strikes across Canada could increase by as much as 80 percent by the end of the century, repeatedly igniting forests that are already stressed by prolonged heat and drought. As warming temperatures continue to intensify drought, lengthen fire seasons, and fuel larger wildfires across Canada’s forests, smoke-filled skies are shifting from rare disruptions to recurring seasonal events. The reality is clear—what used to be a rare, once-in-a-decade event has evolved into a regular, highly disruptive summer expectation. The question is no longer if wildfire smoke will return to Michigan, but rather how often, how long, and how severe the next episode will be.Christina Steele is a 6th grade science teacher at Traverse City West Middle School, and—unsurprisingly—her favorite topic to teach is weather.Featured Photo Caption: Keeping children indoors during the three long mid-July days when hazardous air settled over Northern Michigan felt like attempting the impossible, as families filled the hours with board games, movies, puzzles, and a constant search for new ways to keep restless minds occupied—including naps on the couch.
