Channel Pacific Keeps Its West Sacramento Exemption

The Surface Transportation Board on October 29 left in place an operating exemption for Channel Pacific Railroad over about 2,132 feet of track in a West Sacramento terminal. In Finance Docket No. FD 36932, decided October 27 and served October 29, the Board declined to open a proceeding on a petition to reject the exemption, revoke it, or declare it void from the start. The petition is denied. The exemption took effect in June.

Not so fast: Study on rapid airport route through Natomas paused by Sacramento RT

Sacramento Regional Transit is pausing what would be the first step in establishing a transit line through Natomas to Sacramento International Airport. It says a delay in a state project and loss of a potential revenue stream triggered the decision. CEO Henry Li said Monday during the agency’s board of directors meeting that the study looking into the feasibility of a bus rapid transit route between downtown Sacramento and SMF would not start in spring 2027 as originally planned. The agency has not set a new start date. Bus rapid transit systems, which are set up throughout California, offer shorter travel times than regular buses through features like dedicated lanes and traffic signal priority. BRT is designed to bridge the gap between traditional bus service and light rail. Regional Transit had applied for and received $700,000 in grants to complete the study and conceptual design for a BRT through Natomas. The agency said it would be a stepping stone to eventually establishing light rail in the same area. Extending the Green Line light rail remains RT’s long-term goal, however the estimated cost is about $2 billion. So the transit agency is considering BRT as an in-between alternative that it says
