Wyandotte County voters rejected the chance to invest more local sales tax dollars into their city parks and homelessness services countywide. In Tuesday’s general election, voters denied two sales tax initiatives on the November ballot, including one intended to generate $12 million for community health and homelessness services throughout the county each year and another focused on improving public parks and area infrastructure. Had it been approved, the parks and infrastructure tax, expected to bring in $16 million annually, would’ve applied to improvements in Kansas City, Kansas, only.

Just 10 years ago, Donald Trump headlined a Republican sweep of the federal offices on the ballot in Johnson County. Since then, the suburban Kansas City county’s electorate has continued a yearslong trend of turning the previously purple county solidly blue. As a nationwide “blue wave” led to a hugely successful midterm election for Democratic candidates, Johnson County’s voters spearheaded the shift to the left in Kansas. Along with historically Democratic Wyandotte County, the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro has cemented itself as the political party’s stronghold in Kansas.
