Former East Portland Landfill Site to House Solar Farm, Nature Sanctuary
A former demolition dumping ground on Northeast 82nd Avenue is undergoing a major transformation into a nature preserve and solar farm. In 2024, the Bird Alliance purchased a 12.5-acre piece of the lot, located just across the street from McDaniel High School. The site sits just west of the tree-dense Rocky Butte Natural Area, but the lot itself features mostly overgrown grass. Until the 1970s, the site was home to a quarry operated by Rose City Sand and Gravel, featuring an 80-foot excavation pit. For around a decade in the 1970s and ’80s, the old gravel quarry was used as a demolition landfill, and the pit was filled with construction debris and other trash.

Letter to the editor | Wilcox: ‘No’ vote would reduce your property taxes
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Now that county voters’ pamphlet statements are available, voters can get an early start toward decision-making. What all of the arguments in favor of the Reynolds School District bond fail to acknowledge is that a NO vote would reduce the property tax bill on a home currently assessed at $250,000 by $405/year (250 X 1.62). While approving the bond would increase that property tax line by only the standard annual 3% increase in taxable assessed value, rejecting the bond would remove that line item entirely on your property tax bill, reducing your bill significantly. Bonds generally have a 20-year term, so it’s not often that you have the opportunity to opt-out.

Owner of famed Oregon outdoor shop talks struggles, ways to survive
It’s been a difficult few years for Oregon outdoors shops. The rise of online shopping, inflation, insurance costs and other factors have made once ubiquitous gear shops an endangered species. In just the last few years, Salem Summit Company , Santiam Bicycle , Andy and Bax Outdoor Store and others have closed, while others, like Next Adventure in Portland, have struggled to hang on. Larry Desaulniers knows about the struggles firsthand. The longtime owner of Peak Sports in Corvallis made the difficult decision to downsize his shop last year — and drop programs like bike repair and ski rentals. Desaulniers joined the Explore Oregon Podcast to explain his decision and why it’s such a struggle for outdoor retail in 2026. This interview has been trimmed and edited. The full episode can be found anywhere you get podcasts or at statesmanjournal.com/outdoors/explore Makenzie Stamets: To start out, can you tell us a little bit about the history of Peak Sports? Larry Desaulniers: The store was founded in 1971 by Jeff Katz. He started it as a bike shop and a little hole in the wall. He quickly moved into outdoor goods, both because they're fun, but also bike shops in the winter
