Morning fryer fire shut down Columbia restaurant for part of a day
A national chain restaurant in Columbia was prevented from opening until the afternoon of Nov. 2 after a kitchen emergency. Chili's Bar and Grill , 41 Conley Road, reported a fire involving the fryer at about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2, so the inspector suspended the operating license while cleanup occurred. Routine restaurant inspections happen two to three times per year based on priority and location of Columbia restaurants, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services previously has said. Follow-up inspections are scheduled if a critical violation is found. Restaurants typically may correct noncritical violations by the next routine inspection. Reports are from Oct. 27 through Monday, Nov. 2, unless otherwise noted. Reports may also include local bars and other locations where food may be served. The restaurant's Ansul fire suppression system was activated during the incident. The restaurant had to recharge the fire suppression system, including a sign-off from the fire department; and clean and sanitize all impacted areas and equipment before reopening. With Robbie Avila back, Saint Louis renews rivalry with Missouri
A pair of NCAA Tournament teams from last season, Saint Louis and Missouri, will renew an in-state rivalry on Friday night in St. Louis. The Billikens (1-0) and Tigers (1-0) will square off at a neutral site for their first meeting since 2001. The game will be at the Enterprise Center, home of the NHL's St. Louis Blues. "This is a great opportunity for both programs," Saint Louis coach Josh Schertz said. "And I hope it's something that continues in perpetuity, long after Coach (Dennis) Gates and I are coaching at our respective places." Saint Louis opened its season by defeating another team that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season -- Lehigh of the Patriot League -- 92-67 on Monday. Quentin Jones and Kellen Thames tied for game-high scoring honors with 15 points apiece to lead six Billikens in double figures. Thames played just 20 minutes, converted all six of his field-goal attempts, pulled down six rebounds and added three steals. "He does the same thing all the time," Schertz said. Robbie Avila has been granted an injunction for a fifth year of eligibility by St. Louis Circuit Court Judge Jason Sengheiser. The injunction, placed on Thursday, also prohibits the NCAA from enforcing its enshrined roster limits to keep Avila, the 2026 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, from playing for Saint Louis University.
