Aedan Borges wills Case football to upset over champ Fairhaven in MIAA playoffs

FAIRHAVEN — After losing a thriller at Alumni Field last month, first-year head coach Mike Cloutier and the No. 11 Joseph Case football team wanted another shot against defending Division 6 Super Bowl champion Fairhaven. What transpired in Thursday's Division 6 Round of 16 playoff game was nearly a replica of the first contest as both teams went blow for blow. This time it was the Cardinals who managed to pull out an upset win over the Blue Devils. Aedan Borges scored six touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner on a fumble recovery for a score midway through the fourth quarter to lift Case to an incredible 42-37 victory over No. 6 Fairhaven. Watch MA high school football on NFHS With the win, the Cardinals (7-2) move on the Elite 8 for the first time in school history and snapped the Blue Devils' 15-game unbeaten win streak that dated back to last season. Case won its first playoff game since 1992, snapping a 34-year drought. "I could not be more proud of this team, Borges and the fight from everybody," Cloutier said. "We could have caved early but we stayed in the fight. I've never been so pumped up after a

'Dominant' 6-foot-6 senior paces Marshfield football's mighty run game

MARSHFIELD — Through an often-open hatch in the roof, a fierce downpour muddied the press box's tile floor and exposed the scoreboard operators to the outside. The Marshfield High football team's platoon of running backs, meanwhile, kept dry and upright behind the 6-6, 296-pound human shield of Aidan Nicholson. The senior right tackle helped the Rams churn out over 100 yards of ground-game offense in a 44-0 victory over Silver Lake in the opening round of the Division 3 state tournament on Friday, Nov. 6. Junior running back Jack Giannetti blasted in for 3 touchdown runs. No. 3 Marshfield will host No. 6 North Attleboro in the Elite Eight next (date/time TBD). "He's a dominant offensive linemen," head coach Chris Arouca said of Nicholson. "We can't run behind him enough sometimes. The other guys are all good, too, but when he gets on his blocks and the running backs follow him, it's tough to stop." Nicholson, a three-year starter, began playing in second grade and first informally practiced with the Arouca's varsity Rams as an eighth-grader ineligible to play in his age bracket due to his size. Nicholson, who is still fielding collegiate offers, had three older brothers (Will, Tyler

Rockland football brackets halftime with big plays in blowout playoff win

ROCKLAND -- Momentum can be fleeting in the playoffs. The Rockland High football team had it in spades in the first quarter on Thursday, Nov. 5, grabbing a two-score lead and threatening to turn its Division 7 first-round playoff matchup against South Hadley into a quick knockout. But a turnover and a dropped third-down pass that could have gone for score blunted the Bulldogs' push. The underdog Tigers were hanging around late in the second quarter and threatening to narrow the deficit. So Rockland simply grabbed the momentum back with both hands and never let it go again.
