BSU has about 8,000 undergraduate students, and houses approximately 3,300 across 11 residence halls. Unlike other colleges, BSU does not offer direct guarantees for housing based on class, such as guaranteed housing for freshmen or housing for all four years. Instead, the university accepts individuals to live on campus so long as they enter their deposit before a given deadline. It seems as though this policy has allowed for BSU to continuously over-accept individuals on housing and lead to issues with room availability and overcrowding rooms.Based upon residential data reported to the Board of Trustees in September, Miles-DiNardo, Pope, Scott, and Stonehouse Hall are over their designed occupancy, with Miles-DiNardo holding 415 residents versus its intended 394. Surprisingly, all other halls are currently sitting underneath designed occupancy, with Shea &amp; Durgin Hall having 646 compared to its designed occupancy of 660. This discrepancy is likely due to the fact that various living options for BSU, such as the Honors and Lavender LLCS, gender neutral housing options, and spaces for singles based upon medical accommodations have affected the ability for students to live in certain residential halls.“It basically sucks,” said a sophomore who transferred to BSU this year and is living in a forced quad at Scott, “You never really know who’s going to be moving in or out because of the constrained living environment. It’s like living with three strangers and gives me no control over my living space. Just more people you have to worry about when you want to do stuff, like having people over. And it smells really bad in my room, really bad.”One student with chronic pain, joint, and nervous conditions, said being placed in a forced quad-converted lounge after previously being in a single had significantly negatively impacted their ability to engage in academic, extracurricular, and vocational activities. “There’s no room for growth in the situation that I am in right now,” said the student. “The problem is that single housing is first come first serve. Some people want these singles as a luxury; this isn’t a luxury for me, it’s a necessity.” They added that requests to move had been ignored.Hopefully, BSU’s administration can build a new plan to accommodate the overcrowding of residential halls. Or maybe, it’s BSU to begin construction on a new hall all together.</div></body>
