Town Center master plan envisions more walkable, mixed-use development

This week, the Town Center Community Improvement District provided a first look at its upcoming 30-year master plan at its annual State of the District. The CID is entering its 30th year of operation in 2027. CID leaders met at the Governors Gun Club in Kennesaw to recap some key achievements from its first three decades, and offer a look ahead to the future. The CID serves a roughly 6.25-square-mile area in unincorporated Cobb County and Kennesaw, and includes Town Center Mall. The district, founded in 1997, self-imposes a 5-mill property tax on commercial properties in order to fund infrastructure and community development. “We stand on the shoulders of so many people who came before us, investing in their time and talent and treasure, in order to think about what Town Center could be,” said Tracy Styf, the CID’s executive director. “So for us, with our master plan, it truly is an opportunity to give back to them for everything that they’ve done, but also really look forward to the future and say, what will we look like for this next generation?” In her community update, Styf expressed gratitude for Town Center’s near-30 years of growth and touched on some

Cave Spring pauses commercial permits to address floodplain oversight

Cave Spring’s 90-day moratorium on commercial property permits is now in effect as city officials work to address gaps in floodplain administration and improve the city’s permitting procedures. The Cave Spring City Council enacted the moratorium Oct. 13 following a first reading in September. The measure temporarily freezes the issuance of building and development permits for commercial properties across the city, including those outside designated flood zones. City Manager Stephen Walker said the measure received no public opposition during the meeting and gives officials time to work. “We wanted to standardize our procedures when it comes to permitting as one thing, but secondarily, most of it was due to flood administration,” Walker said. The moratorium follows concerns about floodplain oversight that Walker raised in September, when he said certain training and qualifications had not been maintained for two to three years. Walker said the city’s transition to Bureau Veritas, a third-party building inspection and code enforcement firm, had left a gap in floodplain administration. The city also received a report from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division raising concerns about its responsibilities under the National Flood Insurance Program. If you’re looking for ghoulish delights to decorate your house on Halloween or a scary costume for the kids, note that the Spirit Halloween store has moved from Mount Berry Mall to a new location in West Rome. The new store is in the former Bargain Hunt space at 2210 Shorter Ave. It’s considerably larger than the former mall location, which was previously a Toys “R” Us that closed in 2018. “This space gives them more freedom to work on the retail experience and a lot more parking,” said Donald Edwards, a broker with Atlanta Commercial Real Estate. Alexis and Austin Walker were shopping for Halloween decor Monday with their daughter Marlee, who attends Model Elementary School.
