Developers, residents push back on Lafayette Parish Water District South $5,500 water meter fee
A $5,500-per-meter fee imposed by Lafayette Parish Water District South is halting residential development in southwest Lafayette Parish, drawing frustration from developers, residents, and members of the parish council. Real estate developer Ross Berthelot told the council he has been unable to complete a 300-lot subdivision because of the fee, which the water district tied to $5.5 million in infrastructure upgrades needed to serve about 1,000 new homes slated to be built near Ridge Road. SpaceX in Acadiana? Realtor breaks silence on Pecan Island land deal
The realtor behind a potential land deal for a SpaceX launch site in southern Vermilion Parish spoke publicly for the first time on Tuesday, outlining details at a luncheon in Youngsville and saying the signs point toward something significant happening in the area. Jim Keaty, owner of Keaty Real Estate, addressed the possibility of SpaceX acquiring land near Pecan Island and Freshwater City, where Exxon holds large tracts of property. Keaty cautioned that no deal has been confirmed. Still, Keaty said a combination of factors — including SpaceX's existing operations near Boca Chica, Texas, and infrastructure activity in the area — led him to believe the region could be a viable option for the aerospace company.

The Lafayette Parish School System certified three properties totaling 129 acres near Southside High School in Youngsville on Friday for commercial or industrial development as part of a partnership aimed at driving economic growth in the area. The three properties are situated along Chemin Metairie Road on the opposite side of Almonster Road, directly across from Southside High's campus. LPSS is currently the largest landowner by acreage in Lafayette Parish. The certifications came through One Acadiana's site development program, which completes due diligence on zoning regulations, land titles, land surveying, and environmental studies.
