Water levels dropped by 8 feet at Canisteo Mine Pit in Itasca County
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has turned off the water pumps at the Canisteo Mine Pit, marking the end of a second season of winter contingency pumping. For the last two winters into early springtime, water pumping operations ran 24 hours a day to reduce the water level in the Canisteo pit and prevent it from overtopping. Fatal Single-Vehicle Accident in Nashwauk
On Saturday, May 11, 2024, at approximately 10 a.m., the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a fatal hit and run accident on 2nd Street near Larue Court, in the town of Nashwauk. Itasca County Sheriff’s Office deputies, as well as Minnesota State Patrol, Hibbing Fire Department, and the Nashwauk Ambulance, arrived on scene where life-saving measures were performed. As the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF) celebrates its 30 th anniversary, it is starting a fundraising campaign called the “Seeds of Change”. In an effort to uplift the invaluable work of local nonprofits and bolster the Community Foundation’s sustainability, GRACF is going to take the next few months to raise funds and awareness. The potential funding for nonprofits could be up to $15,000. More information can be found on the Seeds of Change page on the GRACF website. One person killed in Itasca County vehicle crash Saturday
NASHWAUK, Minn. (Northern News Now) - One person is dead after a vehicle crash in Itasca County Saturday. According to authorities, around 10:00 a.m. the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a fatal hit-and-run accident in Nashwauk. The incident happened on 2nd Street near Larue Court.

Saturday at around 10:00am, the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a fatal hit and run accident on 2nd Street near Larue Court, in the town of Nashwauk. Preliminary investigation showed that the accident was not the result of a hit and run incident, but instead the victim’s truck and camper trailer were unmanned as they began to roll from their parking spot. Subsequently, the truck and camper trailer struck the victim.

ELY—Ely Rotary Club awarded a $1,000 grant to United Way of Northeastern Minnesota (UWNEMN) May 8 to support the organization’s local operation of the Imagination Library program. The program, which was launched by Dolly Parton to mail free monthly books to children under the age of five, requires a local affiliate to operate.
