Half of Marquette are renters. Still, tenants say ‘predatory’ landlords run the show
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN/WBUP) — A new doctor moved to the Upper Peninsula to begin her residency at a local hospital. Then her home started to flood. The maintenance issue set off a chain of events that escalated a request for repairs into a fiery conflict, with the landlord accusing her of potentially “severe mental illness” they say has left them fearing for their safety. From the other side, the doctor says the landlord has avoided fixing the cause of the flooding, then threatened a defamation lawsuit and acted "hostile" after hearing she was speaking openly in public about their disagreement. Their situation, and others', begs a question: What happens when tenants and landlords disagree over property issues — and who is supposed to help? Marquette, the largest city in the Upper Peninsula, has a population of about 21,000 people. According to the census as many as 54% of households were occupied by renters. NEW DOCTOR IN TOWN In Jan. 2026 Dr. Bailey Quinn, 34, moved into a rented home on Marquette’s south side. Owned by Schramm’s Superior Properties, Quinn said the $2,300/month, 4-bedroom home on Altamont Street was “perfect.” It’s a two-story house on a corner, built into a hill.
