St. Vincent de Paul breaks ground on expansion project
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — The Marquette District of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of their new expansion project at the Marquette store location. Back in March, we told you about SVdP’s capital campaign to raise money for the expansion, which includes upgrades to the HVAC and electrical systems and a 1,344 square-foot addition for restrooms, offices and a conference room. Karen Reese, president of SVdP’s Marquette District, reiterated those key features and how they’ll allow SVdP to better offer their services. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: St. Vincent de Paul Launches $1.2M Capital Campaign, Aims to Address More Community Needs “We will have a very large educational conference room. We will have separate small offices for interviewing people who need help - a much more confidential environment than we’ve had - and able to actually handle more than one client at a time, so that’s a real plus for us,” she explained. The $1.2 million project was funded by the generosity of major donors and monies donated from the community. Reese shared that the optimistic timeline for completion will be in February 2027, and that the store will remain open and all services will be

Marquette Food Co-op updating policy after string of poor behavior
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — The Marquette Food Co-op is stepping up enforcement of its stores policies, and pairing that effort with a new community investment. Co-op leadership says staff have been dealing with an increase in panhandling, loitering, shoplifting, and bathroom misuse on and around the property, and is now taking action. In a statement Matt Gougeon the General Manager of the Food Co-op said: "The number of panhandlers has increased, not because we necessarily allow them, but because panhandling is lucrative near our parking lot exit as some Co-op shoppers are generous," Gougeon said. "Loitering in the café and exterior Co-op property (behind our kitchen and receiving bay area, benches on Washington St.) has increased as we are rightfully seen as a warm and accepting place." However, he continued: "This also leads to an increase in smoking and drinking on Co-op property. Shoplifting is on the uptick but is certainly not isolated to the homeless folks although they, at times, perpetrate a quick grab. Regular shoppers also steal. Sometimes as much as hundreds of dollars of products at a time." New measures to enforce the stores policies include: Installation of new signage around the Co-op property prohibiting soliciting, loitering,
