Found guilty in June, Avon man will finally be sentenced for assaulting police officer
District Judge Jonathan Shamis on Friday told Eagle County inmate Mark Goodban that he has been found competent to be sentenced for a crime he was convicted of in June. The competency evaluation will also allow several of Goodban’s other cases to proceed, Shamis said. Shamis will preside over the sentencing hearing, but the remainder of Goodban’s cases will be heard by other judges.
Gypsum motorcyclist’s family feeling hopeful following devastating accident
Local motorcyclist Brandon Causey has been giving his family signs of hope in recent days after being found unconscious on Gypsum Creek Road on Monday. Causey suffered an atlanto-occipital dislocation, in which the spine separates from the skull base. After being flown by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Causey underwent surgery to fuse his skull and spinal column.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant declared himself not guilty of felony sexual assault after being charged in Eagle County, the Washington Post reported. “State judge Terry Ruckriegle said he is not yet ready to set a date for the trial, because legal and scientific arguments about evidence in the high-profile case are unresolved,” the Post reported. “But Colorado’s speedy trial law says that a trial must start within six months of a plea — that is, by Nov. 11 in Bryant’s case — unless the defendant asks for a delay.”

The Eagle Valley Transportation Authority kicked off the first day of its fare-free expansion, as well as increased frequency of bus service, on Sunday.
