Joe Neguse paid a quick Wednesday visit to the Vail Valley, starting in Gypsum at the town’s wastewater treatment plant. That plant is the very definition of “sticker shock.” A new facility in 2019 carried an estimated cost of roughly $35 million. By late 2023, the cost had ballooned to $120 million before settling at $85 million. That’s better, but still a staggering increase.

Eagle County Sheriff’s Office investigating death of teenager as a homicide
Eagle County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a juvenile fatality that occurred on Wednesday, April 24, just before 10 p.m. Deputies from the sheriff’s office were dispatched to Second Street Park in Gypsum Wednesday for a reported disturbance involving several people, according to a release from Eagle County Sheriff’s Office. The deputies found that multiple teenagers had been involved in an altercation and that during the incident, one teenager was seriously injured.
Climate Action Collaborative: Local emissions rise 6 percent
The Climate Action Collaborative for Eagle County Communities and Eagle County have released the 2022 Eagle County Energy Inventory, which states that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions rose 6% in 2022 from the 2014 baseline. Communities across Eagle County have set a goal to reduce GHG emissions 50% by 2030 and 80% by 2050.
Eagle County Commissioners pledge $2M for broad effort to help buy Shoshone water rights
The effort to raise the $98.5 million purchase price for the water rights for the Shoshone Power Plant in Glenwood Canyon has taken another step forward. The Eagle County Board of Commissioners Tuesday signed a commitment letter to provide $2 million to the deal to purchase the rights that currently power the aging hydroelectric power plant in the heart of Glenwood Canyon.
Gypsum to update permitting of an old plan for I-70 airport interchange
Town of Gypsum officials are serious about reviving ideas for an interchange to link Interstate 70 to the Eagle County Regional Airport. The Gypsum Town Council recently authorized spending roughly $800,000 to update old permits for the project, but an interchange will require crossing the Eagle River and the Union Pacific railroad tracks. Right-of-way for the project still exists.
West Mountain Regional Housing Coalition’s “Good Deeds” buydown program gains traction and dollars
The West Mountain Regional Housing Coalition is looking for at least $3 million for its “Good Deeds” buydown program, starting with its member local governments. The program aims to separate employment from affordable housing, increase home ownership opportunities, and increase affordable housing stock. It will provide buyers who work in Eagle, Pitkin, and Garfield counties with 30% of a home’s purchase price up front, in exchange for a permanent price-capped deed restriction. The buyer must live in the home as their primary residence.
