Proposal for trains carrying oil through Eagle County suffers another setback, but isn’t dead yet
The prospect of oil-filled trains from Utah rolling next to the Colorado River suffered another setback this week. A Dec. 4 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected a motion to rehear challenges to the Uinta Basin Railway. That proposal was for an 88-mile line linking wells in the Uinta Basin to the Union Pacific Railroad’s main line. That line in Colorado parallels the Colorado River across the Western Slope, including Glenwood Canyon and much of Eagle County.

Study identifies post office blues in Colorado mountain towns
An extensive audit of post offices in Colorado mountain towns found what many residents have been complaining about for years — on-time delivery and pickup of mail and packages lags behind other parts of the state and country. The Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Postal Service...

The Eagle County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved the plan by a 2-0 vote. Commissioners Jeanne McQueeney and Matt Scherr voted for approval. Commissioner Kathy Chandler-Henry was absent. The...

Avon's O’Neal Spur Park Introduces New Dog Run for Safer Winter Walks

Back on Town Council, Vail’s former mayor goes after new speed bumps in parking structures
The speed bumps in the town of Vail’s two main parking structures continue to be a topic of conversation. At the Tuesday, Dec. 5 Town Council meeting, the town’s former mayor, Dave Chapin, asked for council support during matters from mayor, council and committee reports, to direct town staff to “immediately remove half of the speed bumps in the parking structure.”

Finding missing pets in sprawling Eagle County isn’t easy, but there’s a team committed to bringing them home
A few years ago, while tracking a lost dog in Eagle County, locals Evelyn Pinney and Kate Hawthorne started to get the feeling they were being watched. They were following mountain lion tracks which were overlayed on top of canine tracks, never a good sign for those holding out hope for a lost dog. Pinney and Hawthorne followed the tracks to a tree, looked up and found the dog they were looking for, dead and cold and deliberately placed there.
Letter: Who comes up with these ‘improvements?’
Richard Carnes’ column in the Vail Daily was right on the mark! As a 45-year resident, this really depresses me. My credit card is in my wallet in my back pocket, as is normal. So now I must unfasten the seatbelt to remove it upon exiting the structure. Then, because I drive a smaller car rather than a truck or bus, I must get out of the vehicle to tap the card! No wonder there is such a long line to exit. Hopefully, a 10-minute grace period will be added to our time?
Eagle Valley shines at weekend of mixed climbing events
Last weekend, Eagle Climbing and Fitness was packed with athletes competing in mixed climbing events for the American Scholastic Climbing League (ASCL) and USA Climbing Collegiate level. “It’s a great option to offer our USA Climbing Collegiate comp after an ASCL comp because we can offer both bouldering and climbing,”...
Recent storms deliver big boost to snowpack numbers for Vail Mountain
The early days of the water year — which stretches from October through early June — can bring big swings in snowpack numbers. For instance, the Nov. 30 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Snotel site on Vail Mountain showed the “snow water equivalent” of just 2.4 inches, 57% of the normal reading for that date.
Vail’s winter snow removal operations are underway
The town of Vail has transitioned to its winter snow removal operations. As such, no on-street parking is available through April 28, 2024. Throughout the winter season, the public works department is prepared to maintain Vail’s frontage roads and residential streets promptly during and following each snowstorm. However, for efficient snow removal operations on Vail’s streets, residents and homeowners are asked to follow the town’s snow removal policies:
The gas price fluctuate between $3.29 and $3.34 in Gypsum as of 2023-12-07. Find the cheapest station near you.

Letter: Booth Heights fight leads to questions
The town of Vail and Vail Resorts are currently at odds about a development called Booth Heights at the East Vail exit. Last month, Vail Resorts filed an appeal challenging the condemnation decision that granted the town possession of the 23-acre parcel. The town of Vail is trying to protect the herd of bighorn sheep that rely on this location. The vindictiveness of Vail Resorts that I see in this particular matter brings larger questions into my mind.

The Eagle Valley boys basketball squad has always played a team-first brand of basketball. This year, it’s the main storyline. “Last year’s seniors were very talented and not replaceable,” head coach Justin Brandt said. “But this year’s team loves and cares for each other better than any...
One of the Vail Valley’s apartment complexes may become much less affordable in 2 years
The Eagle County Board of Commissioners Monday were told that tax credits are set to expire at the Eagle Villas apartments, a 120-unit complex in the town of Eagle between the Eagle River and the railroad tracks. Those credits, which allow 100 of the apartments to rent at affordable rates to income-qualified tenants, are set to expire at the end of 2025.
