Cedar Rapids schools superintendent sets priorities for year
CEDAR RAPIDS — Tawana Lannin — who will continue as superintendent of the Cedar Rapids Community School District on a rolling contract — has set three priorities she plans to deliver on amid the launch of new programs and the closure and consolidation of schools next fall. Cedar Rapids school board President Jen Neumann last month announced Lannin would continue leading the district with no changes to a contract the school board unanimously approved last year. The contract sets the superintendent’s salary at $314,150, plus benefits, for the next year and states that the district will contribute to a tax-sheltered annuity program in an amount equal to 14.6% of the superintendent’s salary. Since joining the district as superintendent in April 2023, Lannin, 51, has focused on increasing academic outcomes, creating safer learning environments and deepening community engagement. During that time, she’s faced scrutiny, but Neumann said it’s made Lannin a stronger leader. “She’s learned our community needs time to process big ideas and to help shape those ideas,” Neumann said. “Not every leader has that level of awareness. It’s something I’ve really appreciated about her.” Under Lannin’s leadership, the district has launched Freshman Academies, building additions at Jefferson and Washington

Alumni remember those who made Iowa Valley High School great
(This article has been edited to correct athletic records.) MARENGO — Distinguished Alumni and Outstanding Service honorees listened to praise from those introducing them but accepted the awards for the community they were members of. The Iowa Valley Alumni Association recognized alumni Sara Wyant, Mike Goad, Todd Misel, Matt Zuber and Travis Fiser and school employees Clayton Morlan, Dennis Daugherty, Brenda (Roberts) McCaw and Faythe (Kinzenbaw) Roberts during homecoming weekend Saturday at Iowa Valley High School in Marengo. Sara Wyant “I’ve always known Sara as an inspiring mentor,” said Cassie Bott introducing her aunt Sara Wyant Johnson. Wyant spoke during Bott’s high school graduation ceremony in 1996, she said. Some of Bott’s fondest memories are of visiting her aunt all over the country. She exemplifies the values of Iowa Valley, Bott said. Wyant, who graduated 50 years ago with the Class of 1976, celebrated the weekend with her classmates. They were fortunate to grow up with Iowa Valley, she said. Wyant and her sister taught swimming lessons in Marengo, and several hands went up in the auditorium when Wyant asked who had taken lessons from them. When Wyant was in high school, Watergate and Woodward and Burstein were big news.

Maquoketa Valley tops Wapsie Valley in wild Class A District 4
In one fell swoop, Maquoketa Valley recorded a notable victory and helped create chaos atop Class A District 4. Now, four teams are separated by a mere half-game for the district lead, which may not be decided until the regular-season finale. The Wildcats contributed to the upheaval Friday night. Maquoketa Valley made a first-quarter touchdown last and survived a slugfest to upend No. 4 Wapsie Valley, 7-6, in a high school football game at Fairbank. “In general, that was the first time this year where I felt like our team played as one,” Maquoketa Valley Coach Andrew Christensen said. “It's the most physical we've been. It was just a good overall team victory. “We have a ton of talent on this team, but sometimes we struggle a little bit getting it going in the same direction. I thought last night we did great that everybody was doing their job." Maquoketa Valley (3-2, 2-1) grabbed an early advantage. Freshman Finn Dougherty intercepted a pass on the first offensive play. Wildcats quarterback Trevor Grimm and running back Rogan Heidt produced big gains to drive downfield, leading to a Grimm 6-yard TD run. "He lowered his shoulder and got in," Christensen said. "The
