(WWJ) — All of Southeast Michigan is under a Frost Advisory late Sunday night into Monday morning.

The National Weather Service says the area will be under a Frost Advisory from midnight until 8 a.m. Monday , as temperatures as low as 31 will “support frost formation.”

The NWS is reminding residents to take precautions for any outdoor plants, as frost can kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered.

The MSU Extension says the greatest threat for frost in the spring happens “when the sky is clear and winds are relatively calm, creating a temperature inversion.” A temperature inversion is “a layer of air in the atmosphere in which when the temperatures increase with height instead of the much more typical decrease.”

Given relatively clear, calm conditions during the overnight hours, the ground surface cools more quickly than the air above, leading to the formation of an inversion near the surface that can grow upwards in depth from the surface with time, according to the MSU Extension.

The MSU Extension says to cover crops with winter blankets or frost fabric to use the radiant heat from the ground to keep the vegetation from freezing.

As for the rest of the week in Metro Detroit, high temps are expected to hit the mid-60s on Monday before returning to just above 50 by Wednesday, according to AccuWeather.

With hundreds of thousands of people expected to converge on Downtown Detroit Thursday for the NFL Draft, AccuWeather is predicting a high of 55 and a low of 39, with a very small chance of precipitation.

The weather looks even nicer for weekend draft fans, with highs of 62 on Friday and 68 on Saturday, though there could be a chance for thunderstorms later in the day Saturday, according to AccuWeather.
