WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) -- As clean-up continues, police are working to determine who intentionally dumped an oily substance all over the road in West Bloomfield — and why anyone would do such a thing.

West Bloomfield Deputy Police Chief Dale Young said that at around 10:45 p.m. Monday, a resident called to report that they saw a box truck dumping gallons of oil on the ground near Square Lake Road, just west of Middlebelt, and throughout the neighborhood.

Police have not yet identified any suspects, but they're out there looking for clues.

"This is a bizarre story here," said WWJ's Charlie Langton, reporting from the scene early Tuesday morning.

Langton spoke with Isaac Ogle of Lakeshore Towing, as he was helping with the cleanup.

Who does he think did the dumping?

"Ah, someone who doesn't really care too much about the environment, I can tell you that much," Ogle said. "I mean, I can't imagine it. I didn't think people around here would do something like this and, you know, here we are."

Police said the oil is not dangerous, but officials haven't said exactly what it is.

The roads are now open, but drivers are advised to avoid the area of Square Lake Rd., between St Joseph St. and Pine Ridge Rd., and seek alternative routes.

Anyone with information can call the West Bloomfield Police Department at 248-975-9200.
