A soft rain fell on a group of Tomás Rivera Elementary School teachers, administrators and staff members Thursday afternoon. The crowd was quiet, and a guitarist played quietly as the group looked at a freshly planted magnolia tree. A small wooden plaque dedicates the tree to the memory of a student, Phoenix Ho.

The school staff were joined by local first responders, and as they stood under canopies, all made room for the family of Phoenix, the 7-year-old boy who was abused and murdered by his mother’s boyfriend in 2022. The boy’s mother is also serving a life sentence for his murder.
