Neenah schools balance budget by leaving empty positions unfilled
Neenah schools have a balanced budget – but district leaders said they had to make difficult choices in order to make that happen. At an Oct. 27 budget meeting, Neenah schools' finance director Jon Joch and business services manager Amy Gunderson showed what measures the district's taken, and chose not to take, in order to save money. "We can make the budget work," Joch said at the meeting, "but it's really, really tight." The school board ultimately passed the budget. Here are some takeaways from that meeting: Budget balanced through reducing positions Joch and Gunderson said at the meeting they wanted to avoid drawing on their fund balance or going to an operational referendum. Instead, the district reduced and consolidated about 15 positions ahead of the 2026-27 school year. Not only did the reductions save money ahead of a potential deficit, it also better reflected student enrollment, according to district leaders. In March, a staffing plan presented to the board called for reducing five elementary classroom sections and eight special education assistants, as well as removing the Educational Access Coordinator and Program Support Coordinator position from the district office. Joch told The Post-Crescent they had mostly followed this plan, with

Appleton admin assistant is a lifelong Brewers fan | Hallway Voices
For Appleton West High School administrative assistant Debby Andrews , baseball is part of her family and a lifelong passion. "I just can't get enough," she said. Her father played amateur baseball when she was younger, her son Matt Andrews has caught balls in the bullpen for the Timber Rattlers, and her daughter Megan Andrews works in food and beverage service at the stadium. During the summer, Debby can often be found working at the stadium with Megan, too. She's also passed Brewers fandom on to her grandchildren, she said; her 6-year-old granddaughter is a fan of Cooper Pratt. She told the Post-Crescent that it was "exciting" to see the Brewers on their World series run – especially since she's seen a number of the current Brewers team work their way up to the big leagues through the Timber Rattlers. More: Timber Rattlers helped Brewers stars build 'winning culture' "That connection there makes it more special," Debby said, adding, "I hope the ride continues and those magic moments go their way." Here's what else she told us. How long have you been a fan of the Brewers? I've been a fan from little on. We'd taken trips from the Upper

Marinette School District passes budget amid state funding pressures
MARINETTE — The Marinette School District Board of Education’s annual budget hearing focused on a difficult balance: keeping costs controlled while managing limited state revenue, changing enrollment and uncertainty about future funding. After approving the agenda and receiving no public comment, the board heard an overview of the district’s 2026-27 revenue and expenditure assumptions. Finance Director Sean Kelly said the district’s revenue limit is $11,975 per pupil, among the lowest in Wisconsin. Kelly attributed the district’s constrained funding to state policies dating back to the 1990s, which limit the amount districts can raise through property taxes and state equalization aid. “Even at the state average, we are $1,000 off,” Kelly said. Kelly added that matching the average would mean roughly $2 million for Marinette. Enrollment is also shaping the district’s planning. Kelly described a gradual decline, while noting that two relatively large classes are still in the system: recent senior classes have numbered 155 to 170 students. After those classes graduate, the district expects enrollment to settle into a more typical range of about 125 to 150 students per class. Kelly credited staff with adapting programs and services to changing class sizes. The revenue forecast assumes flat per-pupil categorical aid
